THE ENTIRE north wing of the house is shrouded in darkness, and the chill in the air tells me it’s been a while since anybody has frequented this part of the home.
Scrap that.
A home would be a place where somebody feels welcome, loved, and at the very least encouraged. A home is the kind of place you want to return to after a hard day sloughing in the fucking pits for a dollar. Not this sterile trench of lies. These halls have absorbed twice as much negative energy as positive in the time I’ve spent here. The horror they could speak of would set a chill in the bones of the most hardened psychopath. Sure as fuck gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I shoulder my way through the heavy wooden doors that separate the living rooms at this end of the house from the bedrooms. Dust lines the window sills in banks of gray snow, and the lamp and table setting that fills the large space at the end of the hallway has been covered in a cloth. My spine tingles, and on a whim, I spin around to check behind me, laughing when I find nothing there but my own shadow.
Just your ghosts . . .
Pondering if my craziness is hereditary, I carry on the way I was originally headed and reach the dark timber doors at the end of the hall. My warm hand weighs down on the cold latch, and the door eases open with the grace of the lady who once inhabited this room—my mother.
All of her possessions have been removed, and even the furniture is pushed to one side, upturned, and covered in cloths. I draw a deep breath and make my way to the middle of the room where I sink to the mosaic centerpiece on the otherwise stark white tiled floor. Tucking my knees up inside of my arms, I let the heavy air in my lungs go and stare at the hazy images that replay in the room as if from a faded movie. My chest hums with the same rage I’m determined to use when I finally kill my father for what he did.
“No! I swear I won’t say a thing. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry . . . just no . . .” My mother’s voice recedes into a guttural moan as she continues to plead.
“Enough!”
My limbs shake, and I cower under the bed as my father slaps my mother over and over. Her head reels from the impact, and blood trickles down her chin in a delicate stream of crimson. I choke back a sob, knowing he’ll find me if I make a noise. It’s not supposed to be like this . . .
Spit flies from my father’s lips as he yells at her. “Who was he, Sherry? A detective? An undercover? Your fucking lover?”
“I’m not sure,” my mother cries, lifting her hands to fend off the blows she knows will come. “I’ve never seen him before today.”
“What did he promise
