The body was wrapped in blankets which were pinned up with safety pins … We took the body and carried it to the car outside—a Studebaker double-seater … We placed it crossways in the car … between the back and front seats, the head bent up on a curve.

Bonfiglio took the wheel, Queenie sitting beside him, Mitchell and Milward in the back.

It was after 4 am when they reached Coldstream. The sky was beginning to lighten. Queenie stood lookout while her mother, aunt and ex-stepfather—together bearing the girl’s corpse—trudged into the thick foliage and down the slippery gully bank. They dumped the body on the ground and Mitchell undid the safety pins and took the blanket off. She scooped up some dry leaves, fern fronds and sticks, and covered the body. Returning to the car, Mitchell said: ‘She will be eaten by some animal in a few days and it will not be known who she is if they find her.’

On returning to Burnley Street, Mitchell told Milward to clean out bedroom three. She was assisted by Mitchell’s daughters Queenie and Dolly (Mrs Torbey, who had arrived to pick up her husband’s car). Milward remembered:
