Chapter Twelve

When Kavon and Coretta came into the apartment, Darren was running on the treadmill he’d moved into Kavon’s living room. After hitting the kill switch on the machine, Darren jumped off and grabbed his towel. “How’d the visit to the cemetery go?” Darren understood why Kavon wanted to keep Bennu away from that spell, but he still felt anxiety about Kavon investigating with Coretta. It was selfish and possessive and stupid, and Darren couldn’t stop feeling like they should be together. He wiped the sweat off his neck and tried to ignore his jealousy that Coretta had gone out with Kavon.

“Awesome,” Coretta said sarcastically.

Kavon headed straight for the refrigerator. “Do you want a beer?” he asked.

“No, thanks,” Darren said.

Coretta said, “God, please, yes.”

Darren grimaced. “That bad?”

“Hell, yes.” Coretta took the bottle from Kavon, sat at a kitchen stool, and drank.

“We found more magical sinkholes,” Kavon said.

Coretta picked up the conversation from there. “The sinkholes don’t scare me half as much as the damn ley lines. Something big is buried under there, and I do not want to be around when the spell activates. I’m considering emigrating to the moon. How long do you think it will take to get a colony set up?”

Darren sat on the second stool since Kavon leaned against the counter from the kitchen side. “Considering that the government doesn’t have any rockets that can actually reach the moon right now, you might want to reconsider.”

“Siberia,” Coretta said. “I’ll go to Siberia.”

Darren looked at Kavon. “What happened?”

Kavon put his beer down. “There are six sinkholes, and they’re connected by ley lines that seem to feed magic along the perimeter of the cemetery.”

Darren waited for someone to explain what that meant. Coretta spoke first. “Ley lines can connect spells, or they can act like magical barriers, keeping magic either in or out. There are very strong ley lines around the Pentagon and White House to keep magic users from entering and creating havoc with security.”

“That might be why someone chose to put this spell in Arlington,” Kavon said. “Not only do shamans avoid the place, but if a magic user found ley lines, they might assume it has something to do with the Pentagon since that’s right across the street.”

“So, is someone trying to keep magic in or out?” Darren asked.

Kavon frowned. “Good question.”

Darren turned to Coretta, but she just shrugged.

“I have to piss,” Kavon announced before walking away. It was uncharacteristically crude, but Darren could feel Kavon’s aggravation and irritation like a swarm of gnats that infested their bond.

After the bathroom door closed, Darren turned to Coretta. “What aren’t you telling me?”

She took another drink of her beer before answering. “Four of the six spell sites are inside graves paid for by O’Brien’s charity. You know how we didn’t find the most powerful parts of those missing adepts? Well, I think we just found them.”

Nausea swept over Darren. O’Brien had mutilated their missing victims and buried the most potent bits to create some spell. “It can’t be coincidence that this is across from the Pentagon or that it’s on such important land.
