Detective Sergeant Dudley Martin later stated: ‘Appeals for information were made per medium of television networks, radio stations and newspapers throughout all the other States of the Commonwealth. During the course of the investigation many suspects were put forward by members of the public ... [and] a large number of suspects interviewed and eliminated. Particulars of the death of the deceased were circulated throughout every police station … [and] information received from these sources was thoroughly investigated, without success. A reward notice was issued to the extent of $1000 for information regarding the death of the deceased. Certain information given as a result of this reward was investigated, without result.’

But the revelation that a number of similar assaults involving young boys had occurred in the area in weeks before Allen Redston’s death was the first and only breakthrough in the case. Unfortunately, the person responsible for these attacks was never identified to the satisfaction of investigating detectives.

On Saturday 27 August 1966, on the first weekend of the school holidays and exactly a month before Allen Redston met his death, three local teenagers were walking towards Yarralumla Creek via Whyte Place. The boys explored the area for a while and then saw a fleeting glimpse of a large boy beside a pile of dirt near some dumped building materials. This boy, whom they later described as being sixteen years, with straight blond hair, was bending over what appeared to be a bundle of clothing but as the teenagers approached the boy ran away. When they got to the place where the older boy was bending over they found a young boy tied inside a length of dark plastic sheeting—his hands were tied behind his back to his legs with a length of green string and a strip of plastic was tied around his mouth and neck. The little boy’s legs were tied behind his buttocks and linked to his hands and neck by a rope, just like Allen Redston.

The teenagers were quickly joined by some other boys and one of them ripped a hole in the plastic to allow the little boy some air. While two others went to get some help, another boy untied the victim. The young boy was crying and ‘breathing hard’. He told his rescuers that he lived in Service Street, which faced the creek area where Allen’s body was found the following month.

The boy later told authorities that he had been yabbying near one of the stormwater drains near the old Yamba farmhouse and was walking home when an older boy approached him and asked if he wanted to play ‘cowboys and Indians’. He told the boy ‘no’ but the older boy grabbed him and tied him with some rope that he took from his pocket. Having wound plastic around the victim’s mouth and knotting it behind his neck, the attacker momentarily left the boy and returned with a large strip of plastic and told the boy to lie on his stomach. The attacker then wound the boy up in the plastic and tied it off at both ends with green string.
