In the years following Shelley’s death, Eddie Sikes and his second wife, Denise, divorced, and Eddie married Sally, who worked with him at the fabricating company. On the day I interviewed Eddie, she was at his side, patiently prompting answers to questions when the memories crowded him so that he couldn’t think of a name or an event. At one point, he sat in his chair and paged through his yellowing scrapbooks of clippings on his daughter’s case. His eyes grew red, and he appeared near tears. Before long, he put the book to the side, as if to try yet again to push it all into the past.

Eddie Sikes was aging, but as I gathered my things to leave, he confessed that he had unfinished business. “I’m not ready to die yet,” he said, stroking his full white beard. “There are still things I want to do with my life. The biggest one is that I want to find Shelley’s remains. I want to bury my daughter.”
