âGet back to my place and wait there.â Boomer stepped in front of Daphne, whoâd already placed herself in front of Lou. They moved into their roles with ease.
âAre you going in?â Daphne reached for his hand. âI donât think you should. What if someone is still inside? I think you should come with us and we can wait for the police there.â
He wasnât going anywhere. âWe donât know if theyâre still inside. Baby, please. I know what Iâm doing. Iâm going to call the police. You and Lou go and wait. Itâs highly likely that this happened earlier today and no oneâs inside, but I canât be sure. This is what I do for a living.â
Daphneâs eyes had filled with tears, and he could practically feel the worry coming off her. âI donât want you to get hurt.â
The deep concern he saw in her eyes warmed him. He felt for her, and now he knew she felt for him, too. It was a damn good feeling. How long had it been since a woman looked at him the way Daphne was? Heâd had friends, and heâd been in romantic relationships, but those now seemed shallow compared to what he was already building with Daphne. They couldnât wade in. They had to jump into the deep end and be serious because Lou was involved, too.
âI wonât.â That might be the first lie heâd told her. He usually did get hurt. He was kind of a magnet for it. Somehow he was always the one who ended up getting smacked with a chair or hit with an arrow. He did not have the best of luck in the field, but he needed to do something. However, he was pretty sure about this. âI donât think anyoneâs in there because the dogs didnât lose their shit, and you know they bark anytime someone walks by the door.â
To get to Daphneâs apartment, one had to walk by Boomerâs. There were only four units on this floor, and Daphneâs was the one farthest from the elevator. Even if theyâd come up the stairs, they would have walked by his place and the dogs would have let him know.
âThey havenât barked like that, and I was there since we got back at five thirty,â Lou confirmed. âBoomerâs right. Thereâs no way anyone gets by Puddles. He hates everyone but us.â
Puddles was scared of everyone, but his fear came out as loud barking and the occasional bladder bomb. He was an excellent early warning signal.
Daphne nodded, and her shoulders relaxed. âOkay. Youâre right. The dogs are practically their own security system.â
âYeah. Youâre getting one of those in the morning. A security system, that is.â He pulled his cell and keys out of his pocket and nodded back toward his condo, handing Daphne the keys. âGo and settle into the guest bedroom. You two are sleeping at my place tonight. Iâll handle this.â
âI should talk to the police,â Daphne offered. âBut Iâll put Lou to bed and Iâll wait until you tell me itâs okay to come down here.
