“Ready?” Santino says, walking into the living room.

I raise my eyebrows at Scarlett for her answer.

She just nods solemnly.

“We’re ready,” I say.

“Good. Let’s go. We wouldn’t want to be late. And I’m starving. I’ll be hungry after this is over. We should pick up a pizza or something on the way home,” Santino says.

Scarlett and I both nod.

Santino’s eyes look from me to Scarlett, trying to understand what happened while he was napping upstairs. When he can’t figure it out, he doesn’t bother asking. He just walks outside, toward my car that is parked in the driveway.

I motion for Scarlett to follow. She grabs her purse and eyes her broken phone lying on the floor before she follows Santino outside. I pick up the broken cell phone and put it in my pocket. I follow behind, not bothering to lock the door to the house. We won’t be coming back here anyway. It won’t be safe after we kill Marcel. Santino already put our bags in the back of my car. There is nothing left of us here. Nothing to tie us to this house or this place.

Santino is in the driver’s seat, and Scarlett is sitting in the backseat. I climb into the backseat, next to Scarlett, and watch her raise her eyebrows at me in surprise because I’m sitting next to her and not next to my brother in the front.

Santino begins driving in silence, heading toward the pizza joint where Scarlett is supposed to meet Marcel. I reach over and grab her hand, and she lets me. Her hand is shaking and sweaty with nerves. And there is nothing I can do to calm her. Nothing I can say or do will make her feel better. And I know, in a few minutes, she won’t even let me hold her hand anymore. She won’t let me touch her or comfort her. Not with hands that she has seen killing another person.

I’ve already ordered a car to be on standby and drive her back to her apartment because I don’t think she will want anything to do with me after tonight. These next few minutes are the last time she will see me as anything other than a killer. After she sees what I’m about to do, she won’t be able to get the vision of Marcel dying by my hands out of her head. Not when I’m talking to her or kissing her or fucking her. It will always be there. Just as clearly as she has been in my head when I saw her the first time. She doesn’t know it, but she saved Kinsley from her grandfather. It wasn’t me. It wasn’t from the goodness of my heart that I put a bullet in Lee Felton, the man whom I had worked with for years, instead of Kinsley, a woman I barely knew. I protected Kinsley because, the second I saw Scarlett on the television in such pain over losing her best friend, I knew I couldn’t make it real.
