Chapter 17
âIâ¦â I couldnât speak.
âMarcel?â Robert said.
âMarcel?â Death echoed.
âBro?â
I moved the device away from my ear, pushing the end call button.
âMarcel?â Deathâs hands were on my shoulders. âWhatâs wrong?â
âHe⦠Heâs outside.â Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God.
âWho is?â
âRobertâ¦â
âYour partner?â
âHeâs outside.â
Death hurried over to the window to check.
âThereâs a blue car there,â he said.
âThatâs his car.â
My e-scroll buzzed again.
Shit. âWhat do I do?â Panic set in. Panic was never good.
Deathâs hands were on my shoulders again. âTell him you come here to think. Get away from things. It doesnât have to be more complicated than that.â
âCan I⦠Can I say that?â
âOf course.â
âIâ¦â A layer of steel washed over me, rectifying my panic. âYouâre right. I can. I will.â
I answered my e-scroll. âHey. Iâm coming out.â
âYouâre inside the manor?â
âI am. Give me a couple of minutes.â
âButââ
âWait there.â
I hung up.
âYou can handle this,â Death said.
âIâve been keeping you a secret, so I definitely can.â That came out a tad too dark. âSorry.â
He took a step back, hands falling off me. âI get it. I ask a lot from you.â
âI didnât mean to start a thing.â
âYou havenât, Marcel.â
Then why did he look so hurt?
The truth can hurt sometimesâ¦
I didnât resent keeping his secret, though. At least, I didnât think I did.
Your powers grow because he canât do his jobâ¦
I shut down my inner voices. âI have to go. Think I should go home, really.â
âI think so, too.â His tone held hints of sadness.
âIâll see you later?â
âIâll come by at nine.â
âGreat. We can talk more then.â
He stepped forward and kissed me lightly on the lips. âUntil then.â
âYesâ¦â I breathed, wanting more. Instead, I turned and grabbed my jacket, hurrying through the manor and down to the front gates in the pouring rain.
There went my hairstyle.
What the hell was Robert doing here anyway?
My necro partner got out of his car as I approached the gates, staring at me with folded arms.
The locked gates didnât open. I took the hint and climbed over them, selling more of this lie.
I landed on the other side.
âBro?â he said.
âRelax, Iâm fine.â
âI didnât ask if you were, but great. What are you doing out here?â
âThinking,â I answered. âI come here to take a break when things get too loud in my head.â
No response.
âNo one ever comes up here, or so I was led to believe,â I said.
Still nothing, his hands disappearing into his pockets.
âHave you ever had a quiet spot you like to go to?â I tried.
He looked behind me, forehead creasing. âMaybe a hilltop or whatever. Never a creepy house.â
âItâs not so bad. At least itâs quiet.â
âAnd full of rats.â
âNot really.â
Eyes back to me. âWhere have you been?â
âHere.â
âAll day?â
âYep. I fell asleep by accident.â
His face crinkled in disgust. âIn there?â
âThere are beds.â
âThatâs disgusting, bro. Youâre probably riddled with bed bugs.â
I shrugged. âIâm okay. Anyway, I really should head back home now.â
âYeah.â His scrutiny remained on the house. âYou really like thinking in there?â
âI do.â I moved toward my car, jangling my keys.
He turned to me. âWeird. But you do you, bro.
