Chapter 17

“I…” I couldn’t speak.

“Marcel?” Robert said.

“Marcel?” Death echoed.

“Bro?”

I moved the device away from my ear, pushing the end call button.

“Marcel?” Death’s hands were on my shoulders. “What’s wrong?”

“He… He’s outside.” Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God.

“Who is?”

“Robert…”

“Your partner?”

“He’s outside.”

Death hurried over to the window to check.

“There’s a blue car there,” he said.

“That’s his car.”

My e-scroll buzzed again.

Shit. “What do I do?” Panic set in. Panic was never good.

Death’s hands were on my shoulders again. “Tell him you come here to think. Get away from things. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.”

“Can I… Can I say that?”

“Of course.”

“I…” A layer of steel washed over me, rectifying my panic. “You’re right. I can. I will.”

I answered my e-scroll. “Hey. I’m coming out.”

“You’re inside the manor?”

“I am. Give me a couple of minutes.”

“But—”

“Wait there.”

I hung up.

“You can handle this,” Death said.

“I’ve been keeping you a secret, so I definitely can.” That came out a tad too dark. “Sorry.”

He took a step back, hands falling off me. “I get it. I ask a lot from you.”

“I didn’t mean to start a thing.”

“You haven’t, Marcel.”

Then why did he look so hurt?

The truth can hurt sometimes…

I didn’t resent keeping his secret, though. At least, I didn’t think I did.

Your powers grow because he can’t do his job…

I shut down my inner voices. “I have to go. Think I should go home, really.”

“I think so, too.” His tone held hints of sadness.

“I’ll see you later?”

“I’ll come by at nine.”

“Great. We can talk more then.”

He stepped forward and kissed me lightly on the lips. “Until then.”

“Yes…” I breathed, wanting more. Instead, I turned and grabbed my jacket, hurrying through the manor and down to the front gates in the pouring rain.

There went my hairstyle.

What the hell was Robert doing here anyway?

My necro partner got out of his car as I approached the gates, staring at me with folded arms.

The locked gates didn’t open. I took the hint and climbed over them, selling more of this lie.

I landed on the other side.

“Bro?” he said.

“Relax, I’m fine.”

“I didn’t ask if you were, but great. What are you doing out here?”

“Thinking,” I answered. “I come here to take a break when things get too loud in my head.”

No response.

“No one ever comes up here, or so I was led to believe,” I said.

Still nothing, his hands disappearing into his pockets.

“Have you ever had a quiet spot you like to go to?” I tried.

He looked behind me, forehead creasing. “Maybe a hilltop or whatever. Never a creepy house.”

“It’s not so bad. At least it’s quiet.”

“And full of rats.”

“Not really.”

Eyes back to me. “Where have you been?”

“Here.”

“All day?”

“Yep. I fell asleep by accident.”

His face crinkled in disgust. “In there?”

“There are beds.”

“That’s disgusting, bro. You’re probably riddled with bed bugs.”

I shrugged. “I’m okay. Anyway, I really should head back home now.”

“Yeah.” His scrutiny remained on the house. “You really like thinking in there?”

“I do.” I moved toward my car, jangling my keys.

He turned to me. “Weird. But you do you, bro.
