“WHY WOULD you do that?” Silas asked, bending over to pick up the broken bits of phone. “What is wrong with you?”

Scott bent down and grabbed Silas by the collar. He wrenched him up from the floor, hauling Silas to his feet until they stood nose to nose. Silas’s heart never beat so hard, so frantically. Sweat collected on his brow. Tiny beads gathered at his hairline.

Something sinister burned in Scott’s glare. Like his body had lost its soul. Scott wasn’t in there anymore. And Silas had a moment of fear so debilitating he couldn’t breathe. He knew the story of his demise would find its way to the black and white. Sooner rather than later.

“Get your hands off me!” Silas grabbed Scott’s wrists. Adrenaline shot through him, so intense every single nerve beneath Silas’s flesh tingled. The fight or flight instinct became so strong he honestly believed he could rip Scott limb from limb.

“Stop fighting me.”

Everything stilled. They stared at each other. So much hurt and betrayal in Scott’s expression, so much so Silas almost felt bad for him. What in his life could’ve possibly turned him into this monster? Was it mental illness?

“You need to let go of me right now, Scott. I’m not kidding.” Silas kept his words firm and focused on an even tone. He needed Scott to know he was all business, because God knew his bark was a hell of a lot more intimidating than his bite.

“I don’t understand why you keep doing this to me. To us.”

“Scott…”

Scott tugged Silas to him, clinging rather than holding, clutching for dear life rather than lovingly embracing. Silas could barely breathe. He wanted to escape, to flee far, far away where Scott Kramer didn’t have a chance in hell of finding him anymore. The sanctity of his home, of his beautiful city was ruined, and all Silas could do was pray for his savior in blue.

Saved by the bell had never been truer than in this case. The doorbell chimed, and Scott unclenched his fingers. Silas’s heels hit the floor, and though he wanted to rush Scott and attempt to beat him to a bloody pulp, Silas composed himself.

“Don’t move,” Scott ordered. “Don’t make a sound.”

“You know who it is. He’s not going to leave until he knows I’m okay.”

“Fine,” Scott spat. “If this is really how you want it, I’ll leave.”

“This is what I want. I wanted you to leave without a bunch of drama.”

The doorbell rang again.

“Well,” Scott said, “answer it. You can tell your boyfriend I’m getting my shit and I’m leaving. I’m done trying with you.”

“You’re being childish.”

Scott didn’t bother with a response. He stormed back to the bedroom. Slamming followed—a door, a drawer. Silas silently prayed for a quick end to this. Get out of my house. Get out of my life. The doorbell rang again.

With one ear on the goings-on in the bedroom, Silas answered the door. As suspected, he found Ben Logan standing on his stoop. But this was a new Ben Logan, a casual man in shorts and a T-shirt, relaxed but somehow not.
