THE TEMPERATURE OF THE POOL water was tolerable. My feet cannot touch the bottom, so I move my legs and arms to stay afloat. I see Bobby swimming in front of me. He is doing well for just learning, but now he sinks under and struggles to reach the top. He panics and flails his body. His eyes widen. I try to reach out to him but I can’t move my arms. Tricia, move your arms, move them, I think, but they just won’t move. Bobby is trying to reach me as he sinks lower. My legs move. I am able to swim closer to him. He is sinking under me. I can’t move my arms. I can’t help my baby; he is drowning. Tricia, move your arms! I swim down deeper and take his chin in my mouth. I bite down hard and pull him to the top of the water. My arms still dangle at my sides. My mouth still holds Bobby’s chin as I drag him to the side. He grabs for the wall and pulls himself out to safety.

I wake up in a sweat. My head twirls trying to differentiate reality from my dream. My children are all alive and well. I saved my baby. They are safe. I fall back to sleep.
