I’m a sore loser. I’m competitive. Really, my whole family is. You should not play any kind of game or sport with any of us.

I have a great friend named Katy who’s our friend group’s biggest cheerleader. She always remembers to make these big celebration posts on Instagram whenever it’s a big game day or competition day for someone. Katy will show up at my soccer games with a big sign to cheer me on, or bake us all cookies for our birthdays. The thing about Katy is that she kind of thinks that we did great even when we didn’t. It’s impossible to be mad because I let someone score when she’s losing her mind excited because of the other stuff I did that looked impressive to her.

I know there have been days when I was worried about how I’d been doing in practice, and then I saw Katy in the stands with her big sign screaming my name. She really helps motivate me to do my best and not get angry even when I don’t win. Like even when I don’t do well—our team lost a division championship game, and I played really badly that day—she still finds a way to make me laugh or feel better in the end.

Really, when I think about it, I think the difference between someone like Katy and my parents is that I don’t feel like she’s pressuring me to do better. She wants me to play well because she knows I love soccer, not for any other reason. My parents get mad at me when I don’t do well, and I get mad right back at them. I’d rather have Katy cheering me on than anyone else in the world. I don’t want to let her down by losing my temper, or yelling at her when I don’t win. My parents, I’ll definitely get an attitude with them if it goes badly.
