Next day at school, I didn't see Brian. I wouldn't speculate on what had happened because it would only make me seek out the loose cannon. And he'd be waiting on the other end of his beeper. I'd trotted down the stairs, third to first, when the herd of elephants of jocks shot through the exit door and stopped dead in their homophobic tracks.

"The queer likes to hang out in fire stairwells," the chisel-faced jock, his face crowned with short curly brown hair, laughed as he slapped the back of the brawny brute in a school jacket. "Waiting for your girlfriend? Oh, that's right, you like boys."

The brute spoke, his voice loud and taunting. "Wanna suck me off?" He groped his crotch. I looked away.

"I hear you're a fuckin' junkie punk rocker. Queers can play guitar? Since when?"

"Yeah, and I hear you like to draw fags."

Another jock followed with the words that would almost sting if I hadn't deafened my ears. They left me nowhere to go except back up the stairs, but it would be like throwing gasoline on an open fire. So I froze and kept my eyes behind my shades, which drew the fucking comments as well, but my curtain was closed. I needed it that way for more reasons than these pricks.

Never a moment to think, just grasp at what was needed to get by.

Then the chisel-faced jock used enough venom to paralyze even me. "Tell your twink Blondie to watch his back." I was impervious to their pain, but Brian wasn't. He had enough on his plate. I tried to shake the prophetic meaning I could easily attach to any word because words were my source of sanity, right up there with the smack.

So I let a twist of violent thought bubble. I bit my tongue, drawing blood. I let the saliva pool before I spit a wad at the chisel-faced jock.

"Fuck!" he yelled. The other jocks parted like the Red Sea. The chisel-faced jock wiped his chin with the sleeve of his jacket as the others laughed. "You fuckin' better not have AIDS."

"Get tested, muthafucker!"

The brute, choking on a fit of laughs mixed with coughs, the tears dampening his face, coughed out, "We'll catch your gig at RAVE, bro. Hard to imagine a faggot pulling off the cockrock star image." Then he stopped, broke out in another fit of laughter. "Cockrock, fuck me."

More laughter, more poison spikes. I nearly doubled over from the shard that shot through my gut. Fuck me. The need to get off was going to do me in if the jocks didn't.

I slammed through the exit door into the hall, where I ran to my next class as the bell defiantly rang. I made it just in time to see Mr. Waters suddenly perch on the edge of his desk. I grabbed a seat in the back and slapped my books down. I breathed heavily. My face must have been every shade of red. Shit.
