Chapter 6

KNIGHT HAD never been comfortable talking about his feelings. That sort of thing had been trained out of him by the Corps. Weakness of any type was to be suppressed and not spoken of. That didn’t mean he didn’t have feelings, just that he expressed them in other ways. Like the fact that he held Day all night long, watching over him as he tossed and turned, even listening as he talked in his sleep. When Day rolled away, Knight either dozed or got up, peering out the window, trying to shake the feeling that someone was trying to bore through the walls in order to see them. The truth was, the thought of anything happening to Day made him angry and protective as hell. But he often wondered if that was because of the caring that was building inside or Marine discipline and ego. His heart had been closed off for so long, he wondered if he could trust it.

One thing he knew he could rely on was his instinct, and that was what had him sitting in the chair near the curtains, watching outside. He wanted to know if there was someone watching them. Knight knew there was equipment that could sense heat through walls or even penetrate the curtains for a microwave view inside the building. It didn’t matter. Something was triggering his Marine senses, and he wasn’t going to let it go. He’d relied on them too many times, and they had never failed him.

“Come back to bed,” Day whispered. “Even Marines like you need to sleep.”

“I’m fine.” He turned to look outside once again. The feeling would not go away. “Just go to sleep. I’ll come to bed in a minute.” He turned back to the window. Day had rolled over, eyes closed, the bedding pressed down past his waist, just to the point where the curve of his butt was visible. Cheryl, what should I do? The thought that he’d ask Cheryl what he should do about her replacement made his stomach roil. God, had he gotten so maudlin that now he was listening in the dark for advice from his dead wife?

“I can hear you,” Day mumbled. “All that doubt and fear running through your head.” He didn’t turn or move.

“Go back to sleep. You’re full of shit.”

“No, I’m not,” Day said in the same tone. “You’re sitting in that chair looking out the window and wondering about what all this means. You can tell me you’re watching in case we’re being watched, but you’re up because you can’t figure out what’s going on.” Day patted the bed next to him.

Knight swore to himself. What the hell was going on? Cheryl had had that same insight. She could always tell when he was upset about something, and she’d call him on it. “I slept too much earlier, and you need to rest so you’ll be thinking clearly tomorrow.” He thought about giving up and climbing back into bed, but being in closer proximity with Day would not help his ability to think.
