In England, the Rolling Stones were getting together, led by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, who were then only in their mid-40s.

As a few radio stations began playing records from another English group, we began to feel the first stirrings of the gentle breeze that would soon turn into Hurricane Beatles.

Speaking of breezes: Bob Dylan recorded “Blowin’ in the Wind,” singing in a voice so unpolished, so non-showbizzy, so drastically unlike, for example, Bobby Vinton, that you either loved it or hated it, and the side you picked indicated pretty clearly whether you were going to be a willing participant in, or an opponent of, The Sixties.

The Surfaris came out with the instrumental classic “Wipe Out,” featuring three (count ’em!) chords and the drum solo that to this day touches the musical soul of all true Boomers, who sometimes play it with their hands on their office desks when their doors are closed and their co-workers think they’re in there planning corporate strategy.

Perhaps most important of all, the Kingsmen released their recording of the Richard Berry song “Louie Louie”—the song with the lyrics that nobody understood but everybody, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was convinced were dirty; the song with the sledgehammer beat that makes everybody, including statues, want to get out on the dance floor and do the Alligator; the song that is musically so simple it can be learned in minutes by laboratory hamsters jumping up and down on guitars; the song that is responsible for the formation of God knows how many garage bands; the song that we should beam into space so that, if there are intelligent beings out there, they’ll understand what Earth culture is truly all about, so they can avoid us; the song that I hope will be played at my funeral.
