Meridia

Meridia stood amongst the littered stones and quicksilver of the Tower, staring into oblivion. She stood at a place where the fabric of Faeheim was weakest, where a darkness bled through the cracks.

It was the realm of insanity, where Hean ruled.

It was a world made up entirely of nightmares.

The gods had created so many worlds… But for the Fae and their treachery against Lar’na, they had been sworn to protect Faeheim from the Mire by sealing it, and keeping the defences strong. If they ever failed… Then Lar’na’s wrath would be served out against them.

The Mire was free.

Meridia was staring into its maw, a gaping crack in reality, revealing a haze of images that froze her to the spot, that made her blood run even colder than normal, and make her wish she still dwelt among the dead.

She barely had enough power to seal a tiny gap in the barrier, but the entire damned thing was collapsing around her. Fearful tiny black tears rolled down her cheeks. Her world would be overrun with nightmares if she couldn’t find a way to stop them.

Meridia threw out her hands, screaming as the magick seemed to disappear as it reached her fingertips, her strength faded as the Mire stole more and more of her life force, as she strived to rebuild the barrier, seal closed the crack.

She fell to her knees soundlessly, unable to speak, unable to stop as the magick roared through her, as her life force tore free of her, growing and shaping into impossible and endless forms, but it was as a single drop in the ocean, as it beat against the Mire.

She couldn’t hold back the current, she’d die for her people, either sealing closed the barrier, or slowing the Mire down.

That thought was dashed as Meridia was tossed backwards as if hit by a blast of wind, her body crashing onto the ground in a tangled heap.

She felt her bones snap in that moment, her entire body was riddle and broken.

The shadows began to seep through the crack, casting upon the ground.

All she could do was cry as the shadows ran forth over the ground, fear swept over Meridia as a shadow touched the edge of her foot, and then terror seized her heart, and she screamed.

The world was gone, just a blur in the hidden past of the world. She lay alone, chained to a staff held in place by magick she couldn’t comprehend.

Her heart beat out of her chest as a man stood in front of her slowly, anger hiding every feature of his face, and he sneered angrily, “You let me die, Meridia!”

She clenched her eyes shut, “This isn’t real!”

“I found you!” His voice bellowed, her soul recoiling at his voice, and she opened them weakly, “I couldn’t do anything. I’m sorry.”

Tears ran down her face as she faced him, her greatest failure, her greatest nightmare.

“I forged you, and I can send you back to the Source.” He growled, and hefted a broadsword, “But first… A little terror.
