They didn’t stay at the King Street B&B that night. After Simon’s unfortunate encounter with the wall, then finding the button, they were all too agitated to continue the vigil and decided to call it a night.

Susannah and Adelaide headed back to the hotel, but not before Susannah wrapped the antique button in one of the soft washcloths from the B&B. She carried it out of the house with it cradled in her hands. A contestant in an egg-and-spoon race couldn’t have moved with more care.

Edwina convinced Simon to get his hand checked out at a local emergency clinic. He fussed and moaned a bit, insisting he was fine, but relented when she pointed out the fact that his knuckles were turning a garish color.

It took three hours to see a doctor, at which point both Edwina and Simon were ready to punch another wall. However, at least they got the good news that Simon’s hand wasn’t broken.

Of course, she hadn’t really minded sitting with him in that dingy medical office. Even though the magazines were all about ten years old and their conversation was constantly interrupted by a sweet old man who wanted to chat with everyone while he waited for his wife, Edwina enjoyed being with Simon.

For those few hours, it felt like they were just a regular couple, doing run-of-the-mill things. Taking care of each other, instead of trying to prove the existence of paranormal beings.

Because they were in mixed company, they didn’t talk about what had happened at the house, but the memory of the spirit man’s cruel laughter stayed with Edwina. To say nothing of the issue with her ears.

Maybe she needed to book an appointment with her own doctor. Although she suspected a doctor couldn’t cure her of this ill.

Eager for a distraction, she obliged when Simon asked about her work in theater. She was happy to tell him some of her colorful stories from her time with the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada. Between those experiences, and her other stints backstage, she’d collected a few unusual tales.

While at the medical office, they didn’t discuss his conversation with Rupert. After they saw the doctor and filled Simon’s prescription for some pain pills, she convinced him to stay the night in her hotel room. She’d retained her reservation at the hotel, knowing she might need to retreat there at some point.

It was close to midnight when they rolled up to her hotel. After picking up a courtesy toothbrush for Simon at the front desk, they made their way to her room.

“Of course,” he whispered over her shoulder as she unlocked her door, “the only reason I’m staying here with you is so that I can check out the competition. You know, sample their toiletries, examine the thread count on the sheets and stuff.”

“Right.”

“It’s not because I’m terrified to sleep in my own bed or anything.”

“Of course not.” She turned on the lights and led the way in, dropping her key card on the TV table.
