Faurian couldn’t concentrate on the treatise that lay before him on the little table at which he studied. Which was unusual because in ordinary circumstances he’d have found Satrapal Policies during the Reigns of Vartoligor III and Chlaudech VI nothing less than absorbing and riveting. This evening he was too nervous to concentrate properly on the intricacies of Divine Doctrine.
Faurian had many reasons to be unhappy.
He doubted that Captain Changauz had anything solid on his father, who was after all nothing more than a simple carpenter. There were probably not even indications of suspicious activity, let alone proof. It was enough that someone, somewhere in the long chain of command that went up from the City Guard, over the Security Service and Covert Operations to the Body Guard of his Divinity whispered the word traitor to seal a person’s fate. Once the word treason had fallen there was no recourse to be had. What little rights a freeborn citizen had disappeared instantly. Usually the one suspected of treason was locked up and held incommunicado for as long as the investigation into his background and activities ran. Which could be years or decades.
Once in a while someone disappeared. It was enough to say they were suspected of treasonous activity to make all questions stop immediately and forever. People just assumed that the authorities knew what they were doing and that there had to be some truth in the allegations.
If Faurian wanted to see his father again he’d better do what Captain Changauz asked of him. That didn’t mean he liked doing it. Lorsho and Timishi were kind and generous people and he hated spying on them. If only he could explain… He was sure they’d understand.
And now there was Der. Just a young man who had come to Tyleme to seek his fortune. Faurian had seen so many of them arrive in the capital. They were full of plans and hope, full of energy and sure of one day making their way in Lorsanthia’s Pearl of the Sea. Sometimes it took a year, sometimes more, often less. Then they simply gave up. The hard reality of daily existence took over in all its lackluster dreariness. Some left the city, where nobody would miss them, one day to return to wherever it was they had come from. Staying where their fortune had persistently refused to materialize was too embarrassing and painful. Others, on the contrary, found facing their friends and loved ones too shameful and simply stopped talking about their sparkling ambitions, eking out an existence in a city that had never called for them in the first place, silently mourning the demise of their grandiose dreams.
It seemed Der was one of them. Another youth with stars in his eyes. Stars that would soon enough burn themselves to cinders. Or was he? Why would Captain Changauz be interested in a guy who dreamed about a military career? Maybe this was just routine and everyone who wanted to join the army was spied upon for some time.
