CHAPTER 26

LIAM

The day at the store had run long. Too damn long. I hadn’t meant to let so many of my own responsibilities go or just flat out ignore them. However, between Hellspawn disappearing first to her home and then to Pinetree, to Rome and Hellspawn being kidnapped, I’d just fucked off of the rest. My managers were all talented people, they sure as shit didn’t need me telling them what to do.

For the day-to-day stuff, the exclusivity of the boutiques coupled with the special touch each manager had to provide helped. But they couldn’t make the bigger decisions, the far-reaching ones—like setting the budget and choosing the designers. That had to come from the top. My parents counted on me.

I’d loosened my tie before I even got in the SUV to drive home. If I hadn’t been carrying, I would probably have lost the jacket. In the car, I checked messages. There were more than a dozen. Two from Rome though.

Both had question marks. Nothing else.

At the first traffic light, I sent him a thumbs up. He just wanted to know I was all right. Kel had questions. So did Milo. There was even a message from Freddie. He wanted to know why I’d skipped Hellspawn’s surprise party.

A lot of reasons, but none I wanted to discuss with him yet. There were more messages on my other phone. One of them was an order to call the king. Right. I’d get on that.

Later.

Between the shit at the store and the endless parade of meetings interfering with my hunt for who the fuck Brixton was and, better still, who the fuck he worked for, it had been a day overflowing with frustration, aggravation, and in some cases, pure boredom. There were more important things in the world than some up and coming designers or the new thing.

The managers had a better sense for what sold in their stores than I did. The problem, however, lay in giving even one of them more than the others. Competitive as hell, it would just lead to more problems. So I sucked it up, and sat through the five hours of presentations, slideshows, outfits, and designer stories.

Not how I would have spent my day if given a choice. The parking garage was quiet. So was my apartment. I’d added motion detectors as a secondary line of defense and locked my floor even from deliveries if I wasn’t home. The doorman now had a partner, one I paid well to make sure any deliveries and delivery people were vetted upon arrival.

Another check of the apartment cameras before I backed the SUV into one of the sealed spots. I’d added three more to the garage in the last couple of weeks. We’d also gone over the cars for trackers. Found two on my cars.

Not anymore.

Every measure required a countermeasure. No one was getting past me to my brother or Hellspawn again.

Period.

In the elevator, I entered my code to take me to my floor. Sliding my gun out, I waited for the doors to open.
