Chapter 4

Lina woke the following morning feeling refreshed and wonderful. But when she looked around, she was alone in her bed. She would have sworn that Droon had been with her last night. Had she only dreamt that he’d held her tenderly in his arms? Was the warmth that she’d snuggled up to last night been only a figment of her imagination?

Probably, she thought with resignation and a touch of sadness, which she refused to allow herself. Droon owed her nothing. She couldn’t allow herself to be sad simply because she hadn’t been in his arms last night. She’d learned that the hard way.

Her feet dragging and her mind still fuzzy, Lina stepped into the shower and let the warm water finish waking her up. She hadn’t slept so well in a long, long time. Thinking back, she realized that she hadn’t slept so soundly since before that first kiss when she’d had to wake him up. Five days? Six? She wasn’t sure. It didn’t matter at this point. Even if she’d only dreamt of him being with her all night, she still enjoyed the after-effects of her dream.

She dressed with care that morning, not sure what the day was going to bring. Yesterday, she had seen Droon for that hour or so after he’d taken her into his arms and made love to her. After waking up alone, she’d dressed and gone to her office, only to find out that he’d been sequestered with his military leaders and advisors. She suspected that something dangerous was still happening despite the success of the mission to suppress the border violence, but it was all very hush hush. She wanted to find out, but she also knew that there were times when it was safer for everyone if less people knew about an issue.

But if Droon was going to be with his advisors again today, she would feel pretty useless. It was hard to assist someone when they weren’t around to assist.

She sighed as she walked out the door, no longer startled by one of Droon’s bodyguards standing sentry outside her door any longer. Each time she questioned them, the only answer she received was, “Orders,” so she stopped asking. She couldn’t even question Droon about it since he wasn’t around. It was all very confusing, very irritating. She was taking the mentality that the protection detail was just part of her job.

Once she reached the administrative offices, she grabbed a cup of coffee and settled in behind her desk, wishing she could be more productive. She’d already reviewed all the contracts, typed up notes for him on every issue on his schedule for the next week and rearranged all of his meetings that he’d missed. She would hear soon if she needed to reschedule today and tomorrow’s meetings but until she had information, she was at a standstill.

What was worse, by the middle of the afternoon, she was bored to tears. Droon had flown off to an undisclosed location earlier in the day and no one had heard from him except for his guards.
