Chapter Fifteen

TY WOKE THE NEXT MORNING, tired and irritable. After the Swamp closed last night, he’d walked Lola home, where she’d kissed him on the front step like there was no tomorrow and he’d seriously regretted telling Luther that he’d be right back to reprogram the jukebox. Reluctantly, he’d watched her disappear behind the door, not leaving until he heard the reassuring snick of the dead bolt sliding into place.

By the time he and Luther had finished with the jukebox, it was almost four in the morning. When he went to his cabin, Wade wasn’t there, and he wasn’t around when Ty woke the next morning. His brother’s duffel bag was still on the floor by his sleeping bag, the only indication that he hadn’t driven back to Orlando.

Reaching for his phone, Ty sent Wade a text: Where r u?

Wade’s response came about a minute later: Running. What up?

Nothing. Have a good run, Ty typed and set the phone on the kitchenette counter. After a shave and shower, he was out the door, on his way to Lola’s house to see if she wanted to go out for breakfast. It had quickly become part of his new routine, and his day didn’t feel like it truly began until he saw Lola smile at him. For the past couple of days, she’d also made him pancakes that were a hell of a lot better than the burned-up crap they’d served him at the local diner.

To his surprise, she didn’t answer his knock. He knocked again. Still no answer. Acting on a hunch, he walked to the Swamp, where he heard music playing inside but it wasn’t quite loud enough for him to make out the song. As soon as he opened the back door, though, he recognized “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, one of the songs he and Luther had downloaded onto the jukebox last night. He locked the door behind him, crossed the kitchen, and pushed open the swinging door, only to stop dead in his tracks at the sight of Lola bent over a table she was cleaning, her hips swinging to the beat of the music. She wore a blue tank top and gray short shorts that molded to her ass in a way that filled his head with filthy ideas.

Struggling to hold his baser impulses at bay, he moved to the bar and poured a glass of club soda. For the remainder of the song, he watched her move from table to table, scrubbing the countertops and refilling the condiment bottles and napkin holders in preparation for the day’s customers. Finally, as the song ended, he coughed to let her know she wasn’t alone.

She jerked at the sound, and then jerked once again when she turned around and saw him at the bar. Her hair was a little messy, her face flushed from exertion, and he couldn’t help but wonder if that’s how she looked right after being thoroughly fucked.

He’d give damn near anything to find out.
