DAMIEN
I slam the SUV into park and jump out. Before Chloe can get her door fully open, Iâm there, helping her out. She laughs at my haste, but thatâs quickly silenced as I press a kiss against her lips and pull her to my front door. Weâve been driving for what feels like a lifetime, and Iâm buzzing with excited energy to show her my place.
Iâm not going to assume anything. Her coming back here doesnât mean sheâs saying yes to staying the night. Iâm just glad she is willing to spend more time with me.
After entering the code, I wrestle open the heavy wooden front door and usher her into the foyer ahead of me. A series of accent lights automatically come on as the door seal opens. Since the place was basically pulled apart during the renovation, before it was put back together, the decision was made to fit it out as a smart home, an exercise that was easy to do in a shell of a house.
âWow,â she says, looking around, peering into the center of the house. Beyond the formal entry, an old-fashioned concept that my architect begged me to keep, is a large open-plan area filled with seating and low tables in front of an original, working fireplace. The kitchen is in the back, and a more formal dining area is off to the other side. A large wrought iron staircase leads upstairs. Two pots with trailing vines wind their way up the elaborate steel handrail.
Itâs a bit Jack and the Beanstalk, according to my sistersâ kids.
Chloe moves into the living space and runs a hand along the back of the dove-gray suede couchâa huge, overstuffed sectional. Take my word for it, itâs like sleeping on a cloud. I drift off here often, usually after a long night at the bar.
My eyes follow Chloe as she wanders around the room, inspecting my indoor plants, peering out the window, and when she reaches the opposite side of the room, she turns and meets my gaze.
âWhat do you think?â I ask. I can tell she likes it, but I want to hear her say it.
âItâs beautiful. Can I see the rest?â She raises her eyebrows slightly, and thatâs when I know bringing her here was the absolute right thing to do. Iâm a firm believer that your home says things about you that canât be expressed in any other way. It has nothing to do with the size or how much you spend. It has to do with the way you use the space you have and the things you like to surround yourself with.
Chloeâs apartment told me she was a romantic who likes softness and light. But her bathroom, in particular, tells me she has a deeply sensual edge and takes pleasure in seeing that side of herself.
I wonder what she makes of my character through my home. Hopefully, it says good things about me. I extend a hand to her, and she moves closer and lightly lays her hand in mine.
