Raised between Helena and boarding school in Portland, Oregon, Marnie had never spent much time on the reservations. When she did enter protected land, it was a matter of driving through for camping or the occasional girl’s weekend at one of the casinos.

The open spaces always struck her first. The panoramic views were rugged and gorgeous and the stark differences usually refreshed her spirit. Not today. Today she was twitchy and felt watched even though they were the only vehicle on the road. Never in her life had she felt so plain and insignificant as she did now, entering the Blackfeet Reservation with the handsome, magnetic man beside her.

Her bodyguard, charged with protecting her until the trial.

She couldn’t put more on him than that, not even in her imagination. Ditching him wouldn’t work and she wasn’t sure she’d survive if she did. She’d always relied on herself, her ability to take care of whatever curve balls life through her way. This situation eroded her self-confidence and her innate belief that it would all work out.

She’d gone her entire life in a bubble of self-assurance that if she made smart choices and worked hard she’d be just fine. Yesterday’s events cracked those pillars of her life. Any minute they’d crumble and she’d be a puddle of tears and uselessness. Again.

She peeked at Dallas. He’d proven himself inventive, capable, and up to the task. Relying on him wasn’t just her only move, it was the smart move. Still. They were on the same land where awful, cruel men had kidnapped Autumn and who-knew how many other young women.

“Hey.” Dallas touched her shoulder. “Are you sick?”

She hadn’t realized her body had followed her fearful thoughts. She was curled in on herself, as far as the seatbelt allowed, her arms clasped around her sides. “No. Just… I’m just…”

“You’re safe. Focus on that. Focus on me. I’m here, you’re safe.”

He could’ve been speaking to a cornered dog or a spooked horse. And suddenly she understood why that particular tone was so effective.

“I’ve always gone my own way,” she managed. “Stood on my own.” She looked out the window at the vast rural beauty surrounding them and felt smaller than a single blade of the wild grasses bowing to the breeze. For some reason that view combined with his voice eased the knot in her stomach. “There’s never been any doubt I could get through to my goals. But this situation, being under attack, is bizarre. I don’t mean to keep freaking out on you.”

“You aren’t the first and you won’t be the last,” he assured her. “No one should be subjected to this kind of danger. We’ll get you through it.”

And then what, she wondered. “Do you think they’ll keep coming? When it’s over, I mean.” The thought of being on guard for the rest of her days was daunting. Exhausting.

“Why bother after the fact? Once you testify, the two men on trial and the gangs in general will have bigger problems.”

“You don’t think I’ll have to look over my shoulder for the rest of my days?”

“No.
