Chapter 16
I pulled an arm tight around me, soaking in its warmth. I sighed and shuffled against the warm body pressed to my back. My eyes opened, greeted by the stained walls and ripped wallpaper as I remembered I had gone to bed alone. The moonlight shone through the window, casting its silvery light about the room.
“Mik?”
“Sorry, did I wake you?” he asked.
“Don't worry about it,” I replied, rolling over to face him. I cupped his cheek with my hand.
“What's the matter?”
His eyes looked away, avoiding mine. “I couldn't sleep alone.”
“Do you wanna talk?”
He shook his head.
“That's okay. Take as long as you need. I'll wait for you, until you're ready.”
Mik wrapped his arms around me, letting out a deep breath. “Thank you,” he said quietly as he began to drift off. I ran one hand through his hair, and soon after I followed him back to sleep.
It was after nine when we both awoke. The smell of cooking meat caught my nostrils and my stomach rumbled. After showering separately we went downstairs and sat around the kitchen table.
Mik and Sebastian had a fried breakfast set in front of them, while I had to be content with more blood. God, I missed sausages and bacon, and eggs and beans.
Mik stared at the plate, but made no move to touch his food. When Violet insisted he eat, he left the room. I sat with him on the couch, his eyes fixed on the sky outside. I tried a few times to start up a conversation with him, telling him about the shadow demons, and how I journeyed into my subconscious. He replied each time with an “Oh,” occasionally braving an “Oh?” I thought talking would help take his mind off things, but in the end I got nowhere with him.
After a while I suggested going outside for a walk for some fresh air. Mik made a small “Hmmm,” noise and went into the bedroom to pull on a jacket. He stood in the doorway looking at me, as if to ask if I was coming.
I joined him, venturing to put an arm around his waist. He kept his hands buried deep in his pockets, but seemed to huddle closer whenever a cold wind blew against us—for what good huddling up to a dead body does. We walked into the city together, going anywhere and nowhere.
With the sun still high in the sky, the streets were relatively quiet. Humans hurried about their lives, buying groceries, running errands, and socialising in small diners and cafés.
Along our walk we managed to see some of the sights of Aldar, like the remains of an old bridge with large stone towers rising up on either side, their roofs starting to crumble and fall. I thought it was fascinating, but Mik only stared up with a blank gaze. Whether or not he had seen it before or just wasn't impressed, I didn't ask.
“When was the last time you ate?” I asked as we headed back. Mik shrugged. “Come on, Mik.
