Chapter Nineteen

I am determined to start high school being good. Or at least pretending to be good. I'm sick of copping it at home as well as at school. So I put on my nicest smile and went over to the hip girls. They are a tight bunch who do everything together. If I could just get in with them I'd be fine. These girls are rich. Their families give them nice clothes and shoes, and even spending money for after school. Their school uniforms are new for them, not pass-me-downs from their big sisters. Their skirts aren't too long and pinched in at the waist with safety pins to keep them on. Their school shoes are new and shiny, bought just for them.

I know I have been a shit of a kid up to now, but don't they see that I am trying to re-invent myself? So I summon up my least threatening smile and asked Miss Perfect Helen bloody Richardson if I could skip with her mob. She lets me go on one end. Have I died and gone to heaven? Friends at last! I concentrate really hard and made sure that I don't cause a collapse. I am rapt!

Today they let me actually skip with them at lunchtime. I pretended not to hear the snickering as I took Sarah's shoes off. They slop and flap and there's no way I can skip in them. So I throw them aside and skip in my socks. I know Mum will kill me, but it will be worth it. And I didn't cause a collapse and actually did pretty well for a kid in socks.

Then Miss Perfect asked me if I wanted to be part of her group. 'Is she mad?' I think. Of course I want to be part of her group! She says I have to prove that I am worthy.

'What do I have to do?' I ask. It can't be all that tough. After all, I've been thumped by nearly all the boys in primary school and not whinged.

'You have to pinch some lollies from Dickens' supermarket,' she says. 'Today. Straight after school. And we'll all come and make sure you do.'

I'm gob smacked. Miss Perfect telling me to steal? Well, it that's what it's going to take to get in with her crowd, to never have to wander the yard alone again, that's fine by me. I have even been scorned by those pathetic losers who hang out together because no-one else will be seen dead with them. Pinching some lollies is a pretty easy option, I reckon.

So off we set after school. Out the front steps of the school and downhill to the main street. It's the first time that I have walked anywhere as part of a group. I feel surrounded, supported and protected by the ring of girls around me. Fantastic!

They all wait at the door while I go into Dickens'. I go up and down the lolly aisle, trying to work out the easiest item to pinch.
