I barely made it to my car before the tears started to fall. I locked all the doors, lay my head against the steering wheel and sobbed. I cried until my chest ached and I had no more tears left in me.

I couldn't believe this.

I didn’t know what was worse -- that Declan had told Ben to break up with me, or that Ben had actually listened to my brother!

I genuinely thought we had a connection. I thought he cared about me. Maybe even that he was falling in love with me like I was falling in love with him.

I was an idiot.

Wiping away my tears, I did what seemed like the most reasonable thing given the situation -- I texted Alyssa, Liv and Sydney. I told my friends what had happened, and all three of them agreed they’d be at my place with takeout pizza, wine and ice cream as soon as possible.

Feeling a little better that I wouldn’t have to spend a miserable evening alone, I made my way back home. When I entered the house, I was glad to see Declan wasn’t there. I don’t think I could have stomached seeing his smug, ‘I told you so,’ face.

I had just about enough time to shower and change into some cozy pajamas, before the intercom sounded. Checking the video screen, I saw my three friends waiting on the doorstep for me, and buzzed them in.

Alyssa, Liv and Sydney met me in the living room, and after leaving their offering on the dining table, all three wrapped their arms around me and pulled me into a massive group hug.

I held onto my friends and sniffled as fresh tears started to fall.

“It’s okay, we’re here now,” Alyssa whispered comfortingly.

“We’ll look after you,” Liv added, rubbing my back soothingly.

“That asshole didn’t deserve you anyway!” Sydney insisted and we all laughed.

Breaking the embrace, we sat down on the sofa and armchairs, and got started on the pizza.

“I really thought Ben was different from other guys I’ve dated,” I said, throwing my uneaten pizza crust back in the box, and reaching for the wine. “I … I thought I loved him.”

“Aww, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” Alyssa said, passing me the ice cream.

I shoved a massive spoonful into my mouth, and the cool, creamy, sugary goodness made me feel better for a moment.

“I can’t believe Declan betrayed you like that,” Liv said. “I know you mentioned he didn’t approve of you and Ben, but I thought he was coming around?”

I sighed. “I thought so too. Dinner with them both went so well. But then I got sick, and he did a complete one-eighty. You know he even blamed Ben for me getting sick?!”

“That’s ridiculous!” Sydney sounded appalled.

“Right?! He keeps saying Ben is keeping something from me. That he doesn’t really work for Neptune Security Solutions, and other bull shit. I think he’s just making up lies to justify his insane, controlling behavior.”

“What if he’s right?” Alyssa suggested gently.

I stared at her coldly. “I thought you were on my side.
