CHAPTER TEN

DANA’S THOUGHTS raced as fast as the car on their way home. How could two people have such opposing views on the same event? She shifted around to see if Hal was asleep yet. In the process, and still sitting sideways, Dana found herself watching Logan in profile.

If ever there was a man with more exquisite features, she didn’t know who. It wasn’t even that he was so good-looking; it was the way looking at him affected her.

Sometimes he literally took her breath away. She’d never experienced that kind of rush with anyone else. Not before she’d met Logan or since.

From the moment they’d met, she was in lust with him. Love had come a little later, but not much.

“I told Jilly I’d go over for a visit once Hal is in bed. D’you mind?”

Logan glanced over, frowned and then brought his gaze back to the road. “Mind? Why would I mind?”

“Well, I don’t want you to think—” She cut herself off, realizing she shouldn’t say some things in front of Hal on the off chance she wasn’t sleeping soundly. “Oh, never mind.” She shook her head, gesturing that they’d talk later.

Later came faster than she’d wanted. Hal had gone to bed immediately, so Dana grabbed the wine she’d purchased after work and was at the door when Logan stopped her.

“So, what was it you were going to say in the car? You didn’t want me think what?”

Dana tucked the bottle under her arm and expelled a breath. “It was nothing. Really.”

His expression said, Yeah right.

“Okay. I didn’t want you to think I was taking advantage of the fact that you were here. You know…using you for a baby-sitter while I went out.”

“I thought you were only going next door?”

“I am, but still…”

“So how does that translate to your taking advantage? I’m Hal’s father. I’m as responsible for taking care of her as you are.”

He was right. And it felt good to hear him say it. So why did she feel as if she was imposing on him? It didn’t make sense. “Okay, then. I’ll be back in an hour or so.”

“Enjoy yourself.”

He winked and her stomach fluttered, just as it had the first time they’d met. If she’d thought her spirits were uplifted this morning, it was nothing compared to the way she’d felt after hearing Logan describe their wedding. She walked across the front yard to Jillian’s feeling a little floaty, as if she’d already guzzled the bottle of wine.

It didn’t take long for that feeling to be a fact. After most of the second bottle of wine was gone, Jilly hoisted her glass in the air and said, “Another toast!”

Jillian had also bought a bottle of wine for the evening, and after polishing off the first, both had agreed it would be a shame not to at least sample the other one.

“A toast to what?” Dana asked. They’d already sung the praises of little girls full of sweetness and spice, scorned meddling mothers-in-law, thanked their lucky stars for fulfilling jobs, and lamented the woes of same.
