Last night Michael dropped me off at home without more than a kiss on the cheek, so I was pleasantly surprised by the voicemail he’d left me this morning. See you at seven.
It’s so sweet of him to send his limo to pick me up. Even now my heartbeat speeds up in my chest as I step out of the stretch and thank the driver. He pulls away from the curb and I adjust my dress with both hands while holding my clutch under my arm. The heat from the day still clings to the air and my eyes itch from the dry air of Vegas, but I don’t dare touch them. If I do, I’ll smudge my mascara and showing up to dinner with Michael Hanson with smudged makeup seems like a terrible idea.
I’m not going to stress about this. I’m not going to read too much into it. He’s my boss. He’s just being nice to the new girl in town.
I’m here. I text, standing in the casino in front of the five-star restaurant, gathering my composure before daring come closer.
I know. For some reason, his response sends a shiver down my spine. I’m so dang excited about this dinner with him.
I take it with a smile, stunned by the sudden hum in my core as we touch. He hesitates, then leads me inside.
“So how was the drive over?” he asks, glancing down at me with a slight upward curve at the corners of his lips.
“It was great, thank you.”
We make our way to our table, a quiet spot away from everyone else that’s so private I can’t even hear the casino bells.
“I’m glad to hear that,” he says.
A single candle on our table sets the tone for the evening and I sit in the chair he pulls out for me. “Thank you.” Impressed by his manners, I watch him take the chair opposite me. He nods his head.
“Thank you for coming out with me. How do you like Vegas so far?” His eyes meet mine across the table and I lift my shoulders.
“It’s okay. This restaurant is really nice.”
He chuckles. “Glad you like it.”
“Thanks.” I fall silent as the waitress drops off drink, an iced tea for me and something dark for him. She leaves with a smile and I glance at him. “Just iced tea, right?” I ask, arching an eyebrow at him. I don’t want a repeat of last time. I obviously don’t hold my liquor well.
“Just tea.” He smiles and I’m touched he knows I like tea.
As we order and talk and laugh, share our reasons for loving our work and him admitting how impressed he is with my ideas, I find myself losing my head. I like him. I want to spend more time with him. And I want him to take me home.
As the plates are cleared and we wind down, I realize it’s gotten late. I’ve never had so much fun with anyone before.
I reach out to take his drink and give it a sniff.
