CHAPTER FOURTEEN
What am I, a yo-yo? Dev should have just picked a stance and stuck with it.
“SORRY ABOUT HUSTLING you out of bed the minute I got mine.”
Jane glanced over at Devlin, who was busy checking his side-view mirror and changing lanes. She could feel color heating her cheeks. “I wouldn’t exactly call it the minute you got yours,” she murmured. Once he had recovered enough to slide off her, in fact, he’d gathered her against him and held her for a good ten minutes, silently finger-combing her hair, stroking her back and placing random kisses on her forehead, cheeks, temples and nose.
She’d felt wrapped up in care and security.
It was probably best not to dwell on that, however, as a sense of security wasn’t something she could afford to become accustomed to. “And, honestly,” she assured him instead, “I understand. I heard what Finn said before we left—your brothers need you back at the mansion.”
He made a noncommittal noise and, feeling a little unnerved by the continued silence, she rushed to fill it. “Hey, I’m under a deadline myself. So this works out all the way around.”
Actually, she was kind of relieved. Because what did one say in the wake of apocalyptic sex? Her entire view of an activity she had always considered overrated at best had just gone up in a mushroom cloud. She didn’t quite know how to act, let alone what to talk about.
So wasn’t it kind of silly, then, to let it bother her that Dev wasn’t expending any effort to make conversation?
They remained quiet the rest of the ride to the mansion. Once through the kitchen door, Jane was more than ready to be by herself and, leaving Devlin to deal with the alarm code, she hotfooted it down the hallway to the parlor.
He caught her arm just before she escaped inside the room. “What’s this?” he demanded wryly, handing her her car keys. “Can’t wait to shake my dust from your shoes?”
“You haven’t exactly been Mr. Chatty yourself. I assumed you wanted your dust shaken.” She looked at his weathered hand on her silk organza sleeve and just wanted to go into the parlor, slide the doors closed and immerse herself in Miss Agnes’s collections. She knew what she was doing with them, unlike this new-to-her relationship business. Yes, she understood that it wasn’t a real relationship, just a quick and dirty fling, here one day, then gone the next. But there still ought to be some sort of rule book a girl could refer to. For all she knew the last hour and a half might have been it. Maybe she was supposed to remove herself gracefully.
“Have I been quiet?” he murmured, moving close. “Probably because I’m blown away by this afternoon and wondering when I get to see you again.”
“Oh.” The bottom dropped out of her stomach. Okay, so it hadn’t been just a one-shot deal. Good. “Um…you could come to my place tomorrow night if you want.”
He moved closer yet. “Not tonight?”
“No.
