Chapter 11

It seemed to be clear so I walked up the side of the warehouse. Looking through the massive shutter. Rows of racking held crates of all sizes. Arnold was standing there like he was waiting for a bus.

His dark blue fur bristled up along the back of his neck. Seeing Kit standing in front of him. Seeing his lips moving, knowing how much he loved to talk. Walking into view and giving them a wave.

The little fire fox came bounding over to me. Crouching so he could leap into my arms. Fingers stroking that warm fur. “So glad you’re okay.”

“You to. When I woke up I was scared. And between you and me, that guy isn’t much of a talker.”

Laughing as I looked over at the panseer. “He helped us.”

“He said.” I let Kit jump down and I walked over to Arnold. “She’s here, looks like you don’t need to listen to my voice any longer.”

“Not a moment too soon.” The panseer turned to me with a friendlier look. “Did you retrieve what you wanted?”

“I did. Thank you for helping us escape and for looking after him.”

“You’re lucky I didn’t walk away as soon as he opened that mouth.”

“It’s very much appreciated.” Looking around at the warehouse. Not a single person working here. “I thought this place would be crawling with goblins.”

“They’re not the only people who house things here. Each collection have their own codes and keys. You try to take something that doesn’t belong to you….well, you won’t be walking away.”

“Oh.” Looking around like I would see cameras or guns. But there was nothing. “What will you do now?” Looking back as Arnold looked off into the distance.

“I’ve been a slave for over three decades. The world might have changed since the last time I explored it. It’s about time I do that again.”

“Honestly, would be great to see you again in the future.”

“You’re a very strange girl. I like you. Make sure you stay safe.” As he stepped he gave Kit one last look. A growl as a way of saying goodbye. Kit just smiled the way he does. Then he walked out of the warehouse.

With us alone I crouched down and gave him another hug. Thinking I could have lost him was the worse feeling. Stroking down over his fur. Those eyes looking up into mine. His voice out soft. “I think we should stay away from trouble. That was far too scary.”

“Agreed. School is looking much better.”

“Let’s get back before someone comes looking for their stuff.”

“Let’s put you back where you’re safe then.” His lips curled into a smile before he shifted into that light. Pulsing warmth through my body as he disappeared. Suddenly being alone in this place worried me even more.

Looking around I saw those portals, knowing that someone or something could appear at any moment. Leaving by the big shutter door and walking across the courtyard. Through a pair of gates and out onto the open road.

My feet carrying me slowly as I thought about my options.
