TWENTY-THREE

“Agent Bishop, we meet again. Two visits to the ER in two months qualifies you as a frequent flyer.” A doctor whose name she couldn’t remember smiled as she looked up from her chart. “How is your hand?” She chewed gum as she talked, smacking with every syllable.

Jess vaguely remembered her from the night she escaped the basement, the gum, and the way her blond ponytail swished from side to side when she walked.

“Yeah, it’s good, thank you.”

“Is that your new partner?” She gestured to Chan, who was at the nurse’s station talking to a brunette with rosy cheeks and bright red lipstick. He was leaned over the desk and she was laughing at something he said. No doubt he was being inappropriate as usual but at least he had stopped touching things in the ER. He had spent almost fifteen minutes pressing the pedal on the trash can, watching it go up and down. He really couldn’t sit still for any length of time.

She wasn’t sure she wanted to claim him as hers but she nodded anyway.

Jess hadn’t wanted to come to the hospital but the arresting officer had called an ambulance as soon as he saw her. He convinced her to come in and get checked out by reminding her that it would play better in court if she was admitted to the hospital. He also took pictures because juries loved pictures.

“Okay, let me have a look.” The doctor snapped on a pair of gloves and shone a light into Jess’s eye. “Pupils are equal and reactive. That’s good. I don’t love the way your eye is drooping though. That’s probably just superficial swelling but I want to check it out.”

A stab of pain shot through the left side of her face when the doctor pressed against her cheek bone.

“Sorry, I should have said that might be sore. Have you been given anything for the pain?”

“Just ibuprofen.”

The doctor made a tut sound. “Girl, I can do better than that.”

“No, it’s okay. I’m fine.”

“Really? Okay. If you change your mind, let me know, and I’ll hook you up with the good stuff.”

“I’m good, thanks,” Jess said.

“All right. Let’s get you in for an MRI and see what’s going on.”

Jess’s pulse quickened. “Like in the machine?” She had never had an issue with confined spaces before. It was all in the mind, that’s what she thought. But then she had done battle with a serial killer in his basement. She didn’t have a phobia. She preferred to think of it as a personal preference not to freak the fuck out. “Do you have to do that?”

“Your partner said you lost consciousness.”

“No, I didn’t, I mean like maybe for a second.”

“And you were slurring your words.”

Jess closed her eyes; she was not going to win this argument. “I don’t love confined spaces.” She felt stupid even saying it. If she needed an MRI, she needed an MRI, and she needed to just deal with it.

The doctor stopped chewing her gum. Her face changed, the levity gone, replaced with sympathy.
