Chapter Twenty-Four
Ezel
Ezel took off his wrap and draped it on a crate across the cellar. If he lit one more piece of clothing on fire this week, he would have to walk the ship nude. The flames never burned his skin, just hovered on the surface, decimating any fabric that sat on top.
He sat in his usual spot with his legs crossed, preparing his lungs for the heat. He was certainly getting better.
Yesterday, the fire in his veins grew so hot that Milana could see the lines of red glowing underneath his dark skin. She had taken to watching him practice daily. He told himself it was because she found the magic fascinating, but deep down, he knew otherwise.
It was possible, even after Ajaâs words, she was perched on the tall stack of crates behind him. A small part of him found her weird pursual endearing, even if she was cruel in her approach. A much bigger part of him hated the idea that he was even capable of feeling the first.
He took a deep breath and pushed all thoughts of her into the floor and down into the sea, grounding himself before sparking the bodily inferno that would help him raise a shield.
The heat built up fast and the static shield surrounded him quicker than it ever had before. It rose above his head, cocooning him in its isolation. Only the soft buzz of its power present over his own breathing.
He placed his hand against the static, pushing it outward as he drew another fiery breath, this time feeling the heat as a comforting presence rather than a painful one. With every heartbeat, he pushed it out farther away from his body until his palms shook with the effort. He willed the shield to stay in place, to not snap back.
Like a bow string, it had constant tension, ready to strike with force. He opened his eyes and could not see the faint iridescence of the barrier in front of him but could feel its energy buzzing beyond the cellar.
He got to his feet slowly, careful to not let go of his gathered energy, chanting to let the shield stay up. He took a step and paused to see if his movement would have any effect. The air shifted around him, and the static rolled, but ultimately stayed in place. He made his way to the deck, stopping every few feet to check that it was still there.
By the time he reached the deck, a crowd had gathered under the masts looking skyward and then to him. Some even stepped back a few paces. Most of them had never seen magic, they were fearful of it. Fearful of what it meant to be associated with it.
He could feel his eyes glowing and could see the red tendrils of fire that moved beneath his skin. The safety of deniability was gone, and he was a practitioner without secrecy.
Over the railing, a sheen of iridescence surrounded the entire vessel, dancing in tendrils of refracted light.
