Chapter Twenty

“You have a visitor.”

Cassie’s jaw clenched. She was engrossed in overwhelming amounts of money and had only picked up the phone when its incessant ring became overbearing. When she did, it was impossible to miss the jubilance in Julie’s voice.

“I don’t have anything booked in for today,” Cassie said, flicking through her diary, “unless you’ve not done your job properly.”

“He’s demanding to speak to you, and it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere any time soon.”

Cassie was sure she could hear Siobhan in the background, sounding agitated, but couldn’t make out what she was saying.

“Tell whoever it is he’ll have to make an appointment. I’m not at the beck and call of Joe Public, you know.”

“I don’t think he’ll agree to that. He has the exact same petulant look in his eyes that you’ve spent years perfecting.”

Next thing Cassie knew, Siobhan had crept into her office, taking the utmost care to shut the door behind her, as if she were in the middle of a mission for MI5. She was professional to the last at work, so it was uncharacteristic of her not to knock. When Siobhan began twisting her wedding ring, Cassie knew something was wrong. She hung up on her secretary. “I’ve got Julie being a blundering buffoon on the phone and you standing there totally awkward like a hedgehog in a nudist colony. What’s going on?”

“The visitor…” Siobhan pulled her blazer across her chest, buttoning it.

“Spit it out, Siobhan.” Cassie hated being on the back foot. “You know I can’t bear ditherers.”

“The guy asking for you…it’s your dad.”

“What?” Cassie’s stomach dropped. “He can’t be here.” Her pitch was a little too high for her liking, so she consciously tried to calm herself down, leaning with her elbows on the desk and placing her head in her hands. “Tell him to go away.”

“I can’t do that.” Siobhan’s tone was firm as she crossed her arms.

“If you’re not going to help me, there’s little point in you standing there making the place look untidy.” She didn’t look up.

Siobhan approached Cassie, hand extended. “When I heard Julie speaking to you, I knew she was deliberately drawing out the truth. I wanted to come and tell you myself because I know what a shock it must be.”

“I don’t need your emotional support.” She shrugged Siobhan’s hand off her arm. “He shouldn’t be here. I tell you, if I find out who let him in, heads will roll.”

“Cass…” Siobhan reached out again. “Take a few deep breaths; you don’t need to lose it. I get the impression he just wants to talk.”

There was such kindness in her voice, it irritated the hell out of Cassie. “Look, just because we’re fuck buddies doesn’t give you the right to an opinion about my family.”

Siobhan took a step back, frowning. “You assume too much. Buddies indicates something far more significant than what we have.”

A wave of nausea crept over her as she realized this was the first time she had spoken to Siobhan with such disdain.
