CUTTER STUDIED THE TWO OFFICERS sitting in the family room of the old ranch house. The youngest, Wesley Evans, looked to be in his late thirties and had identified himself as a homicide detective. Cutter suspected that his ties to Dane Colley were tight.
The second officer was Saul Prentiss, none other than the chief of police. Green's Harbor was a small town, but the man must have taken Linney's report seriously enough to drive all the way out to Dobbin himself. That or else he just didn't want to chance any bad publicity.
Cutter would guess the chief to be in his mid-forties, with a receding hairline and a slight paunch at the waist.
"How did you know where to find me?" Linney asked as she led the two men inside the house.
"We tried to reach you on your cell phone, and when we--"
"My cell phone never rang," Linney interrupted. She pulled it from the clip at her waist and flipped it open. "No network coverage," she admitted. She frowned. "So how did you find me?"
"We stopped by your house. Alfred Kingston was there and he said you'd left earlier with Cutter Martin."
"What was Al doing at my house?"
"Just sitting in your driveway when we arrived. He suggested we try to reach you at the Double M ranch in Dobbin. We drove out and a man working at the service station down the highway gave us directions to the ranch."
"And you drove all the way out here to follow up on Linney's complaints?" Cutter let his skepticism suffuse his tone. Unless police work had changed a hell of a lot while he'd been out of the country, the police would never be this diligent on a case they'd already closed.
"We can talk in here," he said, stopping in the large family room and motioning for them to take a seat.
The men took the sofa and immediately set the tenor of the meeting by sporting intimidating stares. Linney took an overstuffed armchair across from them, leaning back and crossing her long, shapely legs. Not intentionally seductive, but Cutter could tell that the move got the men's attention. Cutter propped himself up on the chair's arm.
"You wouldn't have had to track me down in Dobbin if you'd responded sooner to my concerns," Linney said, her tone every bit as daunting as their stares. "If that's an indication of how you run the rest of the department, then I can see why your investigation of the drowning was so shoddy."
Wesley sneered. "Our investigation was painstakingly meticulous and according to procedure."
And they were off.
Cutter geared up for the fireworks as he sized up the men and tried to figure out exactly why they'd suddenly decided to make the hour-plus drive to Dobbin after ignoring Linney's complaint for days.
"I read the report of your suspicions," the chief said, "but I'd like for you tell me in your own words exactly why you think Amy Colley was murdered and why her husband would commit such an act."
"Gladly. For starters, Dane Colley physically abused his wife.
