Chapter Sixteen

The basement had been transformed since I’d been down there half an hour earlier. While the large cauldron still sat in the middle of the room, the right-hand side of the room had been set up with a dozen or more candles, all of them plain white—mine were prettier—and all of them lit. Someone had also gone to the trouble of laying out a series of maps. The first was a world map, the second Australia, and the third was Adelaide.

“Are we scrying now?” Hayley asked, falling into step beside me as I took in the view.

A curt nod from Alice.

Serena moved around the space easily, lighting several more candles. Alice held what looked to be some kind of wand.

The whole setup was encased in a pentagram drawn onto the ground with white chalk. At least it wasn’t blood, I didn’t want to be one of those witches.

“Scrying is when we use our magic to attempt to find the location of someone or something. In this case, Billie.”

I nodded. “I’ve seen a few TV shows.”

Alice smiled. “Of course, dear. At any rate, let’s put you on this tip here, Hayley, take the next point along.” I stood there, waiting for further instructions, literally zero idea what I was supposed to be doing.

Alice didn’t step up to the pentagram. “When it comes time, we’ll sit down and join hands. The candles will help to guide our incantation, but they’re not strictly necessary. This should give us a location and then we’ll go get your girlfriend.”

I nodded, understanding the point of the spell but not wanting to interrupt Alice.

“I hear from Serena that you tried a little impromptu scrying yourself.”

“But it didn’t work,” I said with a sigh.

“I wouldn’t discount your efforts just yet,” Alice replied with a wink. “I think there’s a good chance you may have found Billie’s location even if you couldn’t find Billie. That takes a lot more skill than I would have expected at this point. Well done.”

I beamed a little at the praise but deflated the moment I realized we were still looking for Billie who was still missing, potentially abducted by a very powerful, very unfriendly warlock who was using her to get to my coven. Of course, if she hadn’t been abducted and she was just sleeping it off at some friend’s place or worse, she was already home and wondering where I was… well, I’d kill her myself.

“At any rate, that was a slightly different spell. It works best if you already have a rough idea where someone is; it’s very sensitive. It’s best for if you’ve lost someone in a crowd. And it’s tricky unless you have an intense personal connection to the person or thing you’re trying to find.”

“That explains why I can never get it to work when I lose my phone,” Hayley joked.

Lottie joined us, taking the space next to Hayley. Serena slotted in at my side and Alice took the tip of the pentagram.

“Rose, as this is
