Chapter Thirteen

As soon as they were behind the closed doors of Tyrone’s place with Tiana and Dorian gone after they’d eaten, and the threat of being overheard was gone, Kiera turned on Tyrone. “Tell me what happened.”

He’d plopped down on the couch in the family room and was reaching for the remote. “What happened?”

“With that girl Sheri and her cousin.”

He left the remote on the coffee table and leaned back into the cushions of the sofa. He sighed and rubbed his face. “I thought you didn’t care.”

Kiera sat on the edge of the sectional farthest away from him. She’d pretended not to care to avoid unnecessary drama. Now the drama was coming to her.

“That was then, but if she’s going to approach us when the cameras are around that means I’m going to be asked about your past again. If I’m going to be ‘standing by my man—’” she made air quotes with her fingers “—then I need to know if you’re worth standing by.”

He scowled, but Kiera didn’t break eye contact. Tyrone was a flirt and obviously didn’t want a long-term relationship, but he hadn’t given her any indication that he was a dog. The way he treated her and respected her boundaries had lured her into believing he was a nice guy. Today the truth had been shoved in her face again. Just because he wasn’t terrible to her didn’t mean he hadn’t been terrible to other women. If he’d done something awful to Sheri then she wouldn’t be able to pretend to be his girlfriend no matter the consequences.

“Li’l Bit was mad, but her cousin has always carried a grudge.”

“Looks like she’s carrying a pretty big grudge. Is what happened really that small or are you being overly dismissive?”

Tyrone sat up straight and met her eye. “I’m not that type of guy. You want to know what happened, then I’ll tell you.”

She crossed her arms and settled more comfortably on the sectional. “Go on.”

Tyrone took a long breath before talking. “I’ve known Li’l Bit—Sheri—for most of my life. We went to middle and high school together and we were always cool with each other. She’s cool with my brothers, too. Everyone likes her because she’s laid-back and easy to get along with. After my parents died, her family stepped in and helped out, and we hooked up once after graduation.”

Kiera’s eyebrows drew together. “She’s mad because you hooked up once after high school?”

Tyrone shook his head. “Nah, I’m just giving you background. I went to college, so did she, and that was it. I came back home to work at the radio station, and she was living in Columbia, I think. Her mom got sick, and she moved back home. We ran into each other one night, talked about that one time we hooked up in high school. One thing led to another and...”

“You slept together.”

He nodded. “We did. The next morning, I told her that I wasn’t looking for anything serious, and she said the same. We both agreed it shouldn’t happen again, but when she came by my place a few nights later.
