Ian’s night had been long and sleepless. He’d hoped Allison would come to him. To his disappointment, she had not. The need for her throbbed in him whenever she came near and desire pulsed when she wasn’t. He had wanted women before but never with this driving need.

Allison tested him, made him step out of his comfort zone, and even pushed him to meet her wit. She added excitement to his rather dull, always focused on business life. Besides her sex appeal, which she certainly had in abundance, she made him feel alive. When he was with her, he forgot all his responsibilities for a while. Something he rarely had the pleasure of doing.

When she met him for breakfast in the dining room that morning, he found satisfaction in the fact that she didn’t look any better rested than he. Had she lain awake longing for him?

Without much discussion, they had their meal and left for the British Standards Institution office. Already open when they arrived, and in less than an hour, they were leaving with their business complete. They’d gone to a great deal of effort for two signatures. Yet both had been required.

“I must hurry to my office for a meeting but I’d like to take you out to dinner.” He cupped her elbow as they went down the steps.

“You don’t have to entertain me. I’ll be fine on my own. I might head back to Hartshire early.”

Ian couldn’t let her do that. He wanted to spend time with her, especially with him leaving for three weeks. “The train doesn’t run until later this evening. Don’t go yet. Please let me take you to dinner tonight.”

“That sounds nice, but I thought if I stayed, I’d try to see a play. I don’t get to do that often enough.”

Ian didn’t like the idea of her pushing him away. “I should finish with my business in time for dinner and a show. Do you mind having company?”

She took too long to answer for his well-being, but she finally said, “That sounds nice.”

He would have hated to admit out loud how her answer relieved his mind. “Great. Can I drop you somewhere now? At the house?”

“I’ll accept a ride to Piccadilly Square.”

“That I can do.”

They returned to his car.

Twenty minutes later, he pulled to the curb, and she climbed out. Before she closed the door, he said, “I’ll call you this afternoon. You can tell me where to meet you for the show.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out some pound notes, handing them to her.

“I don’t need that.”

Ian wasn’t surprised by her rejection. “Please take it. I’d like you to buy something nice as a thank you for making the trip into London.”

“That’s not necessary.”

He glanced into the rearview mirror. “Allison, I can’t stay here arguing with you without getting a ticket. Take it and use it on yourself. The show tickets.”

She looked around, then snatched the money. “You aggravate me.”

Ian laughed. “No more than you do me. Enjoy your day.
