Chapter Six

For days now, she’d been neurosing about the hotel’s upcoming opening, worrying that things wouldn’t go as well as planned, worrying that she wouldn’t be able to be all she was expected to be. But tonight she had to admit that a good part of her worry was actually centered on the man who was the Oaks.

“Just a man, Rebecca,” she told herself, but she knew that wasn’t true. Logan was much more than that. He was a man who turned her insides to warm vanilla pudding. He had built an empire from nothing and yet he worried about his lowliest employee, he knew every name, he genuinely cared about the well-being of those who cooked his meals and made his bed and dusted his furniture. He was appallingly uncomfortable around children and yet he had done his best to reassure Jack this afternoon.

He was just a man and yet—not. Because he was the man who’d been fueling her restless energy lately, the root cause of her need to do well. She knew this tenth hotel meant a great deal to him and she wanted to be and do everything right to make this work for him. He was the cause of her heated dreams. The memory of his lips covering hers made her tremble even just sitting here alone.

All of this was foolishness, foolishness beyond belief. Because of course all those aching wants inside her would go unfulfilled. She wouldn’t let her heart start yearning for a man who was so clearly wrong for her. Then she would be just like James, wanting the unattainable, letting her emotions get the best of her, letting a drowning kind of love ruin her life.

“So don’t be like that, Linden,” she told herself, climbing from her bed, slipping her feet into red slides and belting her poppy-red-and-gold kimono around her. “Logan may be one of a kind, one in a million, but he’s not going to be your hero, so stop dreaming and get your head right back where it needs to be.”

She would. She’d do something positive right now, call up Deb Lerringer, who kept the records of each Summerstaff auction, and see if any employers had gone away still looking. Deb was a night owl. She would still be up, even after ten o’clock. And, Rebecca thought, maybe if she concentrated on finding a job for July or August, something to look forward to after she was done here, she’d regain some perspective.

“And then maybe…a movie, Rebecca. If you’re looking for a hero, let’s make sure he’s just the fictional variety.”

She’d made her call, had a promise from Deb to check out the possibilities for future employment and was on her way to find her celluloid hero a short time later when she wandered down to the small theater that the hotel housed.

“Logan was probably right,” she murmured. “You just needed to relax a bit. All a woman needs some nights is warm milk, a soft pillow and a good movie.
