Chapter Fifteen

Syun was dying to see Pac. Weeks had gone by with only texts and phone calls to tide them over. In her mind she had asked him many times about her cousin Jandro, but her imagination never gave her his answers. She couldn’t stop thinking about the connection between Jandro and Pac’s employee with the same name. Instinct told her that they were one and the same. She had intended to ask Jandro about it but he’d given her the run around about being late for something. And when he had sworn he’d not ask for help or money again she hadn’t been convinced.

Since the night they had been together Syun found herself thinking about Pac all the time. She hadn’t anticipated a big job starting, but when she bid on it and won, she was thrilled when he was happy for her. Her warning that it would mean putting off their ‘clean up’ date, he laughed and told her they had plenty of time.

As it turned out, he had lots of his own hoops to jump through because of the fire at his worksite. More times than not they spoke for a while before they both drifted to sleep to be ready for the next day’s hard work.

She had him on her mind as she pulled into the parking lot for her apartment.

Truck locked tight, she shifted the weight of the grocery bags in her hands and walked up the one flight to her door. Disgusted, she looked up at the light fixture above the stairs, noticing it was still out. It was still bright outside with the midday sun, but the hallway and stairwell had no windows, and with the light out, it was dark. She had complained to maintenance about it and they had yet to fix it. It wasn’t her safety she worried for but the elderly lady down the hall.

On the top of the landing, she turned towards her door but was slammed backwards into the wall with such force her teeth rattled. She hadn’t heard anyone coming up behind her. With a scream, she struck out but only hit a hard chest. Since it was dark she didn’t see the fist coming at her. It glanced off her cheekbone and then came back to connect solidly on her temple, not once, but twice. The next moment found her on her knees gasping, trying to catch her breath from a punch to her stomach. She fell to the side at the top of the landing and curled into a ball, but not before a booted foot kicked her in the ribs causing her to cry out again.

Vaguely, she heard two sets of feet run away from her and then another scamper her way. She whimpered and tried to move until she recognized Mrs. Jackson’s voice talking. Slowly, she calmed her breathing down and her head cleared enough to feel a hand smoothing down her hair and patting her shoulder gently. She could tell she was being held up by the older woman’s thin arms.
