As soon as we entered Sawyer’s living room I understood.

Not that I needed to understand it to respect Sawyer’s need for her personal space to be just hers. And I hadn’t overlooked what it meant for her to invite me into her sanctum. I’d recognized it for the gift it was.

But upon entering, feeling the vibe of her house, I now fully grasped what she was talking about. The normally serene, tranquil atmosphere was tainted with a current of discord.

I hated this for her.

I wanted to smack the friction out of the air and give her back her harmony.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t within my power to give her.

Porter was standing in the middle of the room with his arms crossed over his chest, a scowl of impatience etched deeply on his face. But before I could explain to Porter that his attitude was not welcome in his sister’s home, he spoke first.

“I’d like to understand how Dylan knows about the family business,” was Porter’s unhappy start.

Again, before I could correct the man’s attitude, Sawyer jumped on him.

“I was unaware our family was a top-secret, classified organization. I must’ve missed the memo that was sent out declaring all family business be held in the highest of confidence.”

I watched Porter jerk back. It was the second time his sister had delivered a blow that left the guy genuinely baffled. Which reinforced what Sawyer had said about her brother, he’d likely never seen this side of her because he’d never done anything to earn her sardonic side.

“What’s gotten into you?” Porter whined.

Yes, whined, like a punk-ass.

“I can ask the same of you. I’ve never known my brother to act like a dick.”

A flash of remorse skidded across Porter’s face. I glanced at Sawyer in time to watch her absorb her brother’s guilt.

And that was what she’d done, absorbed it.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been rude. There’s no excuse, but I was caught off-guard. And I haven’t talked to Marcy about what’s going on. Chrissy and Anne are in the dark and I think it’s best to keep them out of it.”

But not Sawyer—that was what he was saying. His other two sisters would be kept in the dark but he’d dump family shit on Sawyer.

Furthermore, it didn’t escape my notice how quickly Porter had backtracked. Not because he was sorry for being rude, which maybe he was, but he was so quick to act cowed I thought it was a practiced and learned reaction.

How much damage had their mother inflicted?

“Let’s start over, Porter,” Sawyer suggested. “I called you because I needed advice and you’re the best at giving it. I don’t know how to say this or sugarcoat it so I’m just going to tell you.” Porter nodded so Sawyer continued. “Last Saturday, Dylan took me to lunch in Savannah. I saw Dad at the restaurant with a woman.”

Sawyer paused to give her brother a moment to digest what she’d said. However, Porter didn’t need a moment, his response was instantaneous.

“Fucking shit!” he shouted.

Sawyer recoiled and my vision hazed.
