Chapter Fifteen

Meredith was early. A full thirty minutes early and Ros wasn’t ready.

“I’m coming up,” Meredith called after Bonnie announced she had arrived.

“Okay, but I need a few minutes,” Ros replied as she stood at the bathroom mirror brushing her hair.

“Is this what you’re wearing?” she asked from the bedroom. “The outfit on the bed?”

“The one hanging over the door. The gray slacks and yellow blouse.”

“Oh, I like that. I love the metallic thread in the slacks. Is that top see-through? Very sexy, Ros.”

“That’s the top layer. It has a matching shell underneath.” Ros came into the bedroom wearing underwear and a pale yellow camisole as she worked lotion into her hands and arms.

“Which shoes?” Meredith asked as her gaze roamed down Ros’s body, hesitating at her pink lace panties.

“Black ankle boots.” Ros stepped into the slacks and buttoned the blouse. “I like your outfit. Turquoise is a good color on you.”

“I thought it went well with the reunion cowboy theme.”

“Very stylish, theme or not.” Ros stepped into the boots, aware that Meredith was watching her every move. It might not have been so obvious in high school, but with Meredith’s recent admission she was gay, there was a new and different feeling to having her eyes on her body. It wasn’t the same as changing in front of classmates after gym class.

Ros decided she was being silly. Meredith was a good friend. They had seen each other in their underwear many times, even seen each other naked when they used to go skinny-dipping in the creek during Kansas summer heat waves.

She slipped a necklace over her head and hooked a bracelet around her wrist, then grabbed her purse. “Okay, I’m ready,” she said, dropping her cell phone in her purse. “Shall we go?”

“Absolutely,” Meredith declared with an admiring smile. “You look stunning, by the way.”

“Thank you.”

Ros could feel Meredith’s eyes on her as she followed her down the stairs. Yep, she’s definitely practicing being a lesbian, Ros thought. She’s got her eyes on my butt.

“Aunt Bonnie, we’re leaving,” Ros said from the hall. “Aunt Bonnie?”

“Out here, dear.” Bonnie was sitting in the porch swing with the cat, thumbing through her recipe box. “Oh, don’t you two look nice,” she said, beaming up at them.

“You have a nice evening, Aunt Bonnie,” Ros said as she leaned down and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t wait up. This thing could run late.”

They were twenty minutes early, but many of the attendees had already arrived and were visiting, drinks in hand. Meredith seemed to know and remember everyone, even spouses, and joined right in the conversations. Ros hadn’t seen most of these people since graduation and didn’t recognize many of them. Thank goodness for name badges, she thought.

“Ros McClure,” a woman said as she extended her hand to Ros. She was a tall, striking woman in a geometric print sundress and heeled sandals. “How have you been?” She offered a half-hug and a kind smile.

“Meg?” Ros said, quickly reading her name badge.
