To celebrate doing well on our geology exam, Gavin suggests going to lunch at a cafe on campus. Afterward, he offers to show me this infamous studio he works so much in.

“Welcome to my second home,” he states when we arrive at the correct floor in Carpenter Hall. I can’t help but be in awe of the office-like setting. There’re cubical walls, drawings of various projects as well as three-dimensional models scattered around.

“Wow.”

“Trust me. It’s not that impressive when you spend as many hours here as we do.” He points to the other table next to his. “That’s Josh’s desk.”

“Oh.” Not realizing how close he and Josh must be. No wonder they come to Antonio’s as often as they do; they’re just leaving campus.

He grabs a few things from one of his drawers and guides me to the exit.

As we walk past a girl with dark, pixie-like hair and dark-rimmed glasses, she stands and greets us. “Hey, Gavin. How’s it going?” Seeing me, her smile widens. “You must be Alex.” She holds out her hand in greeting. I lean forward on my crutches to extend an arm in return. “I’m Alyse. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” How does she know me? I glance at Gavin.

“You, too,” I manage to say, but I’m still at a loss for many words.

Sensing my confusion, she clears her throat, gaining my attention. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Oh, thanks.” I wonder what she’s heard.

Then she gushes, “The guys talk about you non-stop. Especially, your killer soccer moves. They’ve been bummed you can’t play.” She motions to Gavin, and I can’t help but notice he’s blushing. What’s up with that? “And Wallace here… well, he’s told us how amazing you are in general.” She chuckles loudly. “You must be a good influence on him because I’ve never seen him more prepared for class since your accident. I’m glad you’re on the mend.”

“Thanks, Alyse,” Gavin interrupts. “I hope someday I can repay the favor,” Gavin jokes under his breath.

Alyse gives him a “What did I do?” look and lets the subject drop.

Not knowing what else to do, I say, “It’s really nice to meet you, Alyse.”

“We should get going,” Gavin suggests, avoiding all eye contact. “I don’t want to be late for work.”

As soon as we’re out of earshot from Alyse, Gavin apologizes, “Sorry about that.”

“What?” I ask innocently.

“She really means well, but sometimes gets a little carried away. We’ve all been in the same classes since freshman year. Like I said, we spend a lot of time together so we’re aware of what goes on in each other’s life. Hope she didn’t make you feel uncomfortable.”

“So… You’ve talked about me?” I tease.

Gavin flashes an awkward glance in my direction, grins sheepishly, and almost whispers, “Maybe a little.”

“Hummm.” I suppress a laugh. “I hope it wasn’t bad.”

“No, not really. Everyone was in the studio the day of your accident. They ask about you.” His face shows there’s more he’s not telling me.

“Uggh! Have you told them I’m a horrible patient?” I joke as we exit the elevator.
