Elaine’s body had been found at around 7 a.m. that morning, by a local man who’d been walking to his car. He’d immediately gone back inside and called the police, who soon arrived to cordon off the area. Officers then started canvassing the neighborhood, while forensic experts began processing the scene. Given the state of the body, this was clearly a sexually motivated crime although, curiously, there was no semen. The forensic team also attempted to retrieve hairs and fibers from the victim, using the primitive, yet effective, method favored in those days. This involved running strips of sticky tape over the skin in the hope of picking up microscopic trace evidence. In this case, they found nothing that could be processed with the technology of the day. The strips were nonetheless bagged and placed in storage.
