CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

EMILY SLIPPED INTO the deep, hot water and sighed. It felt good to close her eyes and allow the heat to envelop her. She’d spent the whole day going through her father’s things, yet again. The effort had proven futile. She hadn’t found anything useful or that she hadn’t looked at in her last quest.

Her eyes drifted open and she watched the steam billow up from the tub. The day hadn’t been entirely a waste of time. She had found Madelyn Rutland’s one living relative.

Emily frowned as she considered the woman’s insensitive words. All this time, she’d thought her family was the prime example of dysfunction. Who would have thought that one sister could harbor such contempt for the other?

No family who’d cared about her. No husband to lean upon, since she obviously had not married James Colby. No wonder Madelyn had thrown herself from a bridge. The one man she’d cared about had been murdered.

And he’d belonged to another woman.

How sad.

She shook off that last thought. How could she feel

sorry for a woman who would write such beseeching love letters to a married man?

With James Colby’s son missing, Emily could see how James and Madelyn might have gotten a little too close. After all, Madelyn had been involved with the investigation. She could even see the two getting involved as a result of the monumental stress.

But even years after the child had gone missing, Madelyn had still written to him. The postmarks on the letters spanned nearly a three-year period. Right up until James Colby’s murder.

A relationship that long-lasting couldn’t be blamed on a sudden lapse in judgment or a moment of desperation. If, in fact, James Colby had been intimately involved with Madelyn Rutland as much as two to three years after the abduction of his child, the act had been intentional.

Emily moved her head slowly from side to side. How did Victoria Colby-Camp stand not knowing? The possibility that the man she’d loved and held in such high regard had cheated on her had to be killing her inside.

There she went again, feeling sorry for the woman whose son might very well have murdered her father.

Emily squeezed her eyes shut once more as images of her father on his knees and possibly begging for his life flashed one after the other in her mind. Tears stung the backs of her eyes and she fought hard to get her emotions under control once more.

She had to find a way to maintain her objectivity. It was the only way to look at the situation clearly. She couldn’t let the pain of her father’s brutal death sweep her into an emotional frenzy. Nor could she allow her overactive compassion to have her worrying about Victoria’s situation. Her father’s murder had to be solved first. All else had to be secondary.

Daniel Marks intruded into her thoughts. His image flickered into focus and she couldn’t immediately dismiss it as she’d done the entire day.

Why did she have to feel this silly attraction to him? Now just wasn’t the time for personal needs.
