Tom Hood (1835–1874) was born at Leytonstone, London, and attended Oxford University, where he published the first of the many stories, novels, poems, children’s stories, and other pieces of writing that would appear under his name. ‘The Shadow of a Shade’, written in 1869, ranks among his better known shorter works. After a period in the War Office, he became editor of Fun magazine and subsequently founder of Tom Hood’s Comic Annual. The search for John Franklin’s lost ships, incidentally, continues today. Details of the fate of the crews remain sketchy: all that has been found of them over the intervening 160 years or more is two skeletons and three perfectly preserved bodies. Causes of their deaths appear to have included scurvy and starvation.
