CHAPTER 17

“Good Lord!” Horatius shouted at John. “What have you done?”

“Why didn’t you come, Horace?” Kaitlyn asked. “You promised you’d be right back.” Paying it little attention, she tugged her dress free from where it was caught on the chair.

John stepped beside her like he meant to protect her.

“Now wait just a minute there, Horace. Take care how you speak to my wife.”

“I was yelling at you, not her,” Horatius said.

Horatius rubbed his hand over his face and into his hair. He clenched a handful of hair and felt like ripping at it in frustration. “What do you mean your wife?” he said through clenched teeth, exasperation locking his jaw. He let go of his hair and made himself lower his hand and lock his arms behind him to look less threatening. He wanted to shatter a chair against the wall. Or John’s head.

“We married after last year’s harvest. You have no grounds to protest. You abandoned her.”

Last year? Horatius completely deflated. Every ounce of indignation evaporated. He looked at Kaitlyn. Poor Kaitlyn. He’d betrayed her and broken her trust. `

In a humiliated voice cracking with trepidation, he asked, “How long? How long ago…did I abandon you?”

“It’s been almost three years, Horace,” Kaitlyn said. “What could I do?”

John stood taller and put a protective arm around Kaitlyn’s shoulders. “We love each other. And we are going to have a family together. You caused her enough heartache. You need to go now.”

“But I can’t go.” Horatius sank onto one of the empty chairs and dropped his head into his hands. “Not without you, Kaitlyn. You aren’t meant to be here. I have to take you back to your own time.”

“Maybe we can take Vicar John back too,” Billy said.

Horatius had forgotten Billy was there, silently levitating nearby.

“We can’t do that. He belongs here,” Horatius said.

Kaitlyn looked confused. “Take John back too? Do you think that is possible?”

“You can hear me?” Billy said.

“Of course, Billy. See you too. Though you are a little transparent. You look so much better than the last time I saw you.”

“What’s going on?” John said. He lost his strong stance and looked spooked.

“Do you hear that, Da? She can see and hear me.”

“Yes, yes. Not surprising since she’s been in the Invisible Realm. But we can’t take John. He belongs here.”

“What are you talking about?” John demanded. “Kaitlyn, love, what is happening? What are you saying about the dead boy?”

Kaitlyn sat back down, staring intently into the space above the window. “I wonder if Billy might be right.” She scrunched her brow and took her time before explaining. “Would this make any difference? John almost died, but I helped him. Maybe he would have if I hadn’t been here. He had an accident and almost bled to death. I didn’t mean to yell at those kids, but they were just staring at him. So I jumped in and pressed down on the gash in his leg. Then it took a few weeks before he was all better again.
