Chapter 4

THE NEXT two days were glorious. Sint Maarten was beautiful, and we were now on our way back north, with just days at sea ahead of us. Helen made friends with an Australian named Brian, and the three of us became a foursome. He was pretty cool and treated Helen nicely. He also wasn’t bad to look at, which made Helen smile. She told me it was nothing serious, but he seemed to make her happy, and a little shipboard romance never hurt anyone. It seemed to make Helen glow.

“So you two blokes are together?” Brian asked at one point while Helen had gone to use the ladies room.

I didn’t answer and waited to see what Jordy would say. It was funny, but I hadn’t given much thought to the whole boyfriend thing after St. Thomas. Jordy and I had been spending our time together and making a party out of it.

“Yup. He and I go to the same college, but we got to know each other on the ship,” Jordy said. “Crazy coincidence, isn’t it?”

“Yeah.” Brian said and shifted on his chair. “So what’s it like when two blokes go at it? Not that I want to know the details, but my brother’s a poof, and I wondered if things are all that much different. Ryan and Cowan seem happy and all, but they used to get plenty of razzing from the blokes at school.”

I shrugged, and Jordy did the same. “It’s different for different people, just like it isn’t the same with different girls. But it’s how you feel about the person that counts. At least it should be. I mean, getting your rocks off is fun and all, but it’s better when you care for the other person,” Jordy said.

Brian nodded. “But I thought blokes did it like rabbits. ’Cause no one can get pregnant and all. Ryan says he did before he met Cowan.”

“I never did the rabbit thing,” I said. Helen returned, and not a moment too soon. I’d never been so relieved in my life.

“What were you talking about? Poor Brad looks like he’s about to jump overboard.”

“We were just talking about things. No worries, mates,” Brian said, flashing Helen a brilliant white smile that made her giggle. Dang, that was a sound I’d never heard before—Helen giggling like a schoolgirl. It was nice to see her happy and a little off-balance. She sat down next to Brian, and the two of them talked quietly. After a while, they got up and jumped in the pool.

“Do you want to swim?” I asked Jordy.

He hesitated before saying, “I think the water has lost some of its appeal. I don’t want to think about what happened, but it’s hard not to.” I wished I knew what to tell him. “I know I shouldn’t let it stop me, but….”

“The water is nice and it will cool you off. Besides, there are no waves, and you can touch the bottom because it’s only four feet deep. So come in with me.
