Twelve

Iwalked on cloud nine for the rest of the week. I was so happy about the new development in my relationship with Damian that I wanted to tell absolutely everyone about it. I wanted to shout to the heavens (or at least to the sixty-eighth floor) about my new official significant other and how amazing and sweet and beautiful and perfect he was. I managed to hold myself back, however, not wanting to alienate my small group of New York comrades. Not the least of which were Lily and Hunter, who were still not completely on the Damian fan wagon. Or anywhere near it, really. Still, despite this, I functioned in a state of ever-present smiles.

In fact, I even managed to keep that goofy smile on my face when Amelia Applewhite (the mousy-haired, saber-toothed wad of bad manners I’d met on my first day with the firm) walked into the Feldman audit room on Wednesday morning and looked around like she owned the place but really wished she didn’t. She saw me almost immediately and just couldn’t seem to stop herself from rolling those wire-rimmed eyes. You know, as though the fact that I was sitting in the same room amounted to a really trying day for her.

“Hi, Amelia!” I cried in unwarranted delight, waving furiously at her. Hey, if she was going to be unnecessarily unpleasant, I’d be the opposite … to an annoying degree.

She just studied me with a look of disgust on her face. I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud.

I watched as Dave walked up to her with a rare look of welcome on his face. He exchanged a few quiet words with her and then turned to the room at large and clapped his hands.

“Okay, guys!” he called out. “This is Amelia Applewhite. We’ve pulled her onto Feldman since we’ve had an increase in work with the M&A transaction and we’ve had to reassign people. We’re assigning her to the cash team to take Jie’s place.”

Usually I’m a pretty “go-with-the-flow” type personality. But I’ll admit that it took a great deal of effort to stifle my groan at the thought that Amelia and I would be working together on a daily basis. We didn’t exactly mesh well.

Amelia didn’t seem to be all that thrilled, either, as Dave led her over to where my team was sitting. He introduced her quickly, and she managed to glower steadily at all of us. I glanced around to my team members, noting that they all seemed about as happy to have her as she was to be joining us.

“Cash?” Amelia said, turning to glare at Dave. “Really? You realize that I just spent the past month doing detailed work on collateralized debt obligations over at Monarch Bank, right? I think I can handle something a little bit more complicated than cash. I thought I would be working on the M&A deal.”

I whistled quietly through my teeth at her moxie and Manuel chuckled beside me.

Dave did not appear to be impressed either.
