Chapter Thirty
Noelle
Noelle dozed off and on, proud of herself for ignoring Griffin as long as she had. He was like gravity. Every minute since heâd found her, the pull she felt for him tugged harder. His presence behind her was like a physical thing. Like safety and home. Two concepts heâd made her believe in, despite her history, only to have them thrown back in her face with a giant âno, thank you.â She couldnât get sucked into that again. Not while she was barely afloat.
The baby pushed against her bladder, reminding her that it was time for a bathroom break. Her lower back wouldnât mind a stretch either. She tapped Faithâs hand, and her friend started.
âCan we stop soon?â she asked, feeling a twinge of guilt. Because Faith couldnât trust anyone, sheâd being doing twenty-four-hour duty and it showed in the agentâs eyes.
âSorry.â Faith glanced at the GPS screen. âMy mind was a million miles away. Thereâs a small town at the next exit.â She took her hand off the wheel long enough to squeeze Noelleâs fingertips. âIâm sorry I didnât think to stop sooner.â
âI know you have a lot on your mind.â
âIâm not the only one.â Faith tipped her head toward the back and Noelle made herself look at Griffin. He had his face buried in a notebook as his pen made tiny, neat lines of text on the page.
This was a Griffin mode she remembered. His ability to hyperfocus. Shallow lines of concentration furrowed his brow and his left leg bounced on the floorboard as if to dispel excess excitement. Every few seconds, he stopped to scratch the back of his head. A genius brain hiding behind a face sheâd always considered the picture of male beauty. Sharp jawline, squared chin covered in a short scruffy beard, and tight smooth skin marred only by fine lines on the corners of his eyes. Eyes that werenât squinting?
She twisted in her seat. âYou arenât wearing glasses.â
âI got Lasik,â Griffin said, closing his pen into the notebook. âMy glasses fell apart when I dislocated my nose.â
âOh.â Sure enough, his nose curved slightly off-center as if it had been knocked out of place and never reset. Perhaps sheâd been avoiding looking at him more than sheâd thought. Avoiding acknowledging him at all. Why? To punish him? Or because she didnât trust herself to stay indifferent if she did? She didnât like what either of those questions implied.
The glint in his eye almost dared her to ask how heâd been injured, but she wasnât ready to dive deeper. She had plenty of other things to think about. âIn my defense, you didnât wear glasses much when we were alone together.â
He nodded slowly as a heated intensity gathered in his eyes. âI didnât need to see when we were in bed. I had every inch of you memorized.â
Noelle blinked at the same moment heat pooled between her legs. Had Griffin really said that? Her gaze shot to Faith, who bit her lip and looked ready to laugh.
