Chapter 29

Tyler

I felt like such a dork wandering along the side of the road this morning picking fucking flowers, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures. Hayley agreed to let me take her out on Friday and I know it has to be perfect and meaningful for sure.

I finally decide on a big way to show her not only how sorry I am, but how much she means to me. It’s like I told her, I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, and the fact that it’s happening so fast is fucking terrifying. But I also know that if I would have pushed her away for good, I would have regretted it. I need to see this through, the pull in my chest tells me to.

Dean and Mike instantly call me on my shitty appearance and attitude the day after my drinking binge. Mike’s more pissed that I didn’t invite them to partake in it since I never drink like that with them. I wasn’t in the headspace for a night of debauchery with the boys, that’s for sure. Lord knows what might have happened if I had included them. I also fill them in on Hayley showing up and putting me in my place. Dean gets a kick out of that.

“I’ve known Hayley my whole life, Ty. The fact that she stood up to you like that makes me proud!” He pats me on the shoulder and then stops, leaving his hand pressed into me as he squeezes. He looks me dead in the eye and turns serious in a heartbeat. “But like I told you. If you hurt her, I WILL kick your ass.” His face is deadly serious, and I actually swallow a bit too hard.

“I know Dean. I wasn’t in a good place, alright? Believe me, I’m going to make it up to her.”

“You’d better. She is one-in-a-million. You fight for a girl like her.”

I know I shouldn’t go there, but I figure since we’re being honest with each other, I’ll turn this around on him. “So, if that’s how you feel about Pauline, why don’t you fight for her?”

He stands tall and gets right in my face. “You don’t worry about Pauline and me, alright? We have our own issues to work out.” He turns and walks away from me, seething. Okay then, that is definitely a sore subject.

I continue with my shift while planning all the details of my date with Hayley in my head. She has to come around at least a little with the date I have planned for us. I know I have one chance to get us back on track, so it has to go perfectly.

I leave work a little early on Friday, with Uncle Mic’s permission of course, so I can get everything ready for our date. I stop by the craft store to pick up some supplies and a hardware store for a few things as well. I race home to clean up and change and stop by the pond to set everything up before going to pick up Hayley.
