Chapter 19

Lila’s group stuck around longer, spending their time searching and examining the place. Every so often they stopped by to give her an update. There wasn’t much she could do except sit anxiously by and wait. She picked at her fingernail, chewed the inside of her lip, but nothing helped.

Time moved forward. Visitors came and went. Each passing minute stole a little of Lila’s hope. She began to accept they wouldn’t find anything. Not here and not today. The longer she sat, the more her thoughts bended towards Damon and Brent, growing jealous that they might have found something without sharing the information.

“We’re going home,” Maggie announced, taking a seat next to Lila. “There’s nothing here for us. We’re all tired and hungry and you must be bored stiff.”

She didn’t want to accept that they hadn’t found anything. It didn’t matter what she thought. These people were her eyes. “You’re sure there’s nothing related to my uncle?”

“We’ve looked everywhere. We’ve been inside the tower three times. I’ve looked around the perimeter and the parking lot. Jeremy has been texting Arianna, trying to come up with something important regarding their father.”

Lila grimly shook her head. “Thank you for at least trying.”

“I’m sorry,” Maggie conceded the same setback. “Maybe we are looking in the wrong place. We explored Coit Tower on a whim. Those numbers could mean anything. I might have been wrong in bringing you here.”

“At least we can cross this place off our list. There’s only a hundred other places to go through now.”

“Look, your uncle clearly wanted you to find something. He didn’t give the ring to Arianna or Jeremy. He gave it to you.”

Such positive thoughts didn’t enter Lila’s mind. “Or maybe he didn’t want me to find anything. My uncle knew better than anyone about my blindness. Maybe he gave me the ring so I wouldn’t find the numbers on the inside of the band and wonder enough about them to make me want to discover their significance. Ever think of that?”

“I don’t know, Lila. I’m as confused as you are.”

“Sorry, cousin,” Jeremy said, taking a seat on the other side of her. “I’m beat. This has been a long day and I still have to go to the office.”

“You’ve done enough,” she said, thinking of the problems at the company. “Today must have set you back a lot.”

“Don’t sweat it. I’m sorry, but I have to get going.”

“You’re going to work now?” Maggie said, clicking her tongue. “The sky is turning dark.”

Lila held up her hand. “Jeremy’s right. We’re done. There’s nothing more for us to do. I want to go home the same as everyone else.”

“She’s right,” Gavin said.

“Maybe tonight one of you can look at a map of this place. Check to see if we missed a spot. We can always come back tomorrow. I’d like to go home too.”

“You can’t go back to your house,” Maggie said, overly worried. “Come and stay with me and Gavin tonight.”

The thought of crashing at their place brought little comfort.
